#Jasperfire report says Alberta government complicated response https://calgary.citynews.ca/2025/07/17/jasper-fire-report-alberta-response/ “A report into a wildfire that devastated the Rocky Mountain resort town of Jasper says crews did their best but command and control was hampered by the Alberta government.”
They kept asking “show us the arsonists”.

Back from #volunteering in #Jasper. I am still processing everything, but am so grateful I got to give back to the community. The people I met on this op are nothing short of amazing - they move mountains to help others, an experience that'll stay with me for a long, long time.

Oh FFS! I hate it when the interviewer hasn’t done their research and neither has the interviewee. Mark Connolly on CBC Edmonton AM just asked Ron Hallman, the head of Parks Canada, if there was any intention to put fire breaks in north of Jasper.
There are already fire breaks north of Jasper! Neither of them knew that.
<sigh>

Banff Sunshine Village just shared this photo of just how close the #JasperFire got to Marmot Basin. They said Marmot will reopen this winter.

Looking at satellite imagery from August 11th around Jasper and you can see how close the fire came to Marmot Basin. Looks like the road up acted as a bit of firebreak.

@AmeliasBrain @DavidM_yeg Jasper did a lot of thinning of pine beetle trees around the town and clearing west of town. The difficulty is they try to avoid equipment that would damage the forest floor so all the cleared areas were done by hand and they hauled the wood out with horses. They use the wood for their trail projects, benches, picnic tables fences, etc. I think they also sell some of it speciality wood shops as the patterning caused by the beetles is pretty.

I can't confirm this but it is plausible. Apparently when Parks Canada was logging firebreaks west of Jasper they used horses rather than heavy equipment to get the logs out. This preserves the ground ecology.

I appreciate that after some fairly lopsided reporting on the Jasper fires we’re getting some more nuanced analysis. Personally, while I recognize Parks did a great deal to protect the town, I am left wondering if they had put firebreaks similar to the ones north of town to the south if that could have slowed the fire enough to save more of the town. That said, I also recognize that may have been planned for the future and nature blew the schedule.

For Connaught Dr, the first photos showed that Jasper Brewing had survived and that there was a clear cut with all the debris next door.
However there’s now a photo that is truly showing firefighters fighting the fire at this location.
It’s likely that they hurried to bring the whole building down once the fire reduced and why all the debris look re-arranged. But it was not a preemptive destruction.
