Finished Red Side Story! Satisfying ending that leaves me hoping for the third one.

I was introduced to Jasper Fforde’s books when I was a student and enjoyed the Thursday Next series a lot, though the later books were a bit weaker. The spin-off Nursery Crimes series was fun, but not quite as good.

In 2013, I found another book of his in a charity shop: Shades of Grey. This book was a completely new setting and was absolutely superb. It had been published in 2009 and ended with a reference to two forthcoming sequels, which I assumed would be available soon. A few years passed and they still weren’t out. Eventually, I gave up waiting.

Over Christmas, a post here made me reply with a Jasper Fforde reference and I went to see if he’d written anything recently, only to discover that Red Side Story (the sequel) had come out in 2024! Sadly, I can’t remember who borrowed my copy of Shades of Grey. My partner ordered both and they arrived on Friday. I reread Shades of Grey yesterday and Red Side Story today. Absolutely worth the wait.

No spoilers, but it’s a great ending that leaves open the chance of follow-on books but doesn’t feel like an unfinished story (unlike the first one, which very much felt like a Part 1).

And now back to the stack of books I got for Christmas. I only finished four of them before rereading Shades of Grey, so have a nice pile left.

And that’s it. I finished „Red Side Story“ by Jasper Fforde. I guess this concludes what he started with „Shades of Grey“ (no, not THAT one!) over a decade earlier. There is of course enough to continue the story but I don’t believe he will. Surprising number of plot twists along the way. I guess I will have to re-read the first part now. It has been ten years or so at least…

Fourteen years ago, I read Fforde's Shades of Grey and my life hasn't been quite the same since. It was a magical tale, almost totally devoid of exposition, building in an fantasy world like no other. Fans have been clamouring for a sequel ever since.

The first few chapters of the sequel do an excellent job of exposition - but this isn't the sort of book you can pick up without having recently read the original. I got a dozen pages into Red Side Story before I realised that I remembered nothing about the original. So I went back to read Shades of Grey. I'm delighted to say it was just as good as I remember - a delirious ride through a messed up world.

The second book is… more of the same. It slowly reveals more of the backstory and its grim origins. It builds to a rather satisfying conclusion. Along the way it gets a little tied-up in its own rules, and makes some weird pop-culture references. But never fails to be brilliantly perplexing in its structured surrealness.

In one my smarter moments I likened our era to someone arriving late to a concert, just as the final chords were hanging in the air.

If you like Fforde's inventive and bizarre worlds, you'll like this. But, I warn you, it really needs you to have read Shades of Grey first.

Four months ago, I wrote to Waterstones about an error in an eBook I purchased from them.

I've finally received a reply...

Issues with content require corrections from the publisher and can often take weeks or months to resolve.Unfortunately the time it took to correct this issue was due to delays from the publisher and not OverDrive."

In fairness, they did refund the cost of the ebook. Rather annoyingly, they revoked my access to download it again.

I realise that it must take some time to find a sober editor in a publishing company - but 12 weeks to replace one image with another really doesn't seem right.

It's sloppy errors and poor customer service like this which will kill the eBook revolution.

Or, perhaps, that's just what some publishers want...?
