I won't claim great expertise on #abpoli; there are actual Albertans around who could give more insight than me. That said...There's always been a small portion of Albertans who are separatists or annexationists, as well as a large portion who resent central Canada (not without reason). The separatists have outsized influence in the UCP [0].
[0] I recently heard #JasonKenney describe how certain delegates showed up early Saturday morning to revise the party constitution.

Asked about the claim, Smith said in an interview with CTV over the weekend that her UCP caucus members “can sign whatever petition that they want.”
