  1. People may not like this but I absolutely ADORE #DHH and #JasonFried s takes in this podcast episode:

    • Feature comparison is bullshit as it will always end up in some enterprise software that sucks your soul out
    • We want more colors in our aplications. Make us feel happy instead of depressed.
    • #AI in applications can be useful WHEN it's working correctly. Don't give us 90% correct AI, we'd rather not have it at all then.

  2. No more later

But, when you work in six week cycles, or relatively short time frames, later means something else entirely. There’s no time for later. It’s now or not. Later doesn’t mean we’ll get to it at the end of this cycle. It means we’ll drop it. Later means another time, not this time. Later isn’t an obligation, it’s a maybe. Later isn’t a cage, it’s freedom. It’s not a debt to pay off, it’s an asset. There’s no pile of pile ups, there’s no guilt, there’s no feeling of late nights and crunch time ahead. Later simply means not now, not soon, and not for sure.

I read this and it really landed. Six weeks. Six weeks is an amount of time I can truly apprehend and plan for. Six weeks has become my new project size. If it cannot be done in six weeks, it needs to be broken down into multiple projects.

  3. Considered

We don’t want reactions. We don’t want first impressions. We don’t want knee-jerks. We want considered feedback. Read it over. Read it twice, three times even. Ponder. Sleep on it. Take your time to gather and present your thoughts — just like the person who pitched the original idea took their time to gather and present theirs.

Sure, a little bit of snark. The point stands. It’s so easy to raise the first objection that comes to mind. (As if that hadn’t already been thought of.) What’s harder is to read, reflect, and then put in some actual effort to reply. This level of engagement certainly isn’t necessary in every interaction, but there are many interactions that would be vastly improved by it.

  4. "Discussing something in a chat room is like being on the shot clock. There’s a small window of time to be heard before the point you want to respond to scrolls away. So people often just yell something out just to be heard. The same phenomenon can be seen on Twitter. An accelerating conversation leads to shallow sound bytes and talking points — no different than talking heads on TV that only have 3 minutes to make their point before the segment ends."
