From the novel Hula by Jasmin ʻIolani Hakes:“Haole. Meaning without breath. Land of aloha. Alo, to share. Ha, breath. Aloha, to share breath.” In one of my first classes with my kumu, she griped about this false etymology of the word “aloha” being shared on social media. “You can’t just take Hawaiian words apart” This is not a correct etymology of the word “aloha,” and probably not of “haole” either. #jasminIolaniHakes

Speaking of ʻōkole in the novel Hula, one more thing— what is this #metaphor “they knew that water better than their own ʻōkoles”? I gather it’s a local-flavor version of the well-known phrase “to know something better than the back of your hand,” but butt doesn’t work like hand here. You can’t see your own butt without a mirror. Do you really know it well? #jasminIolaniHakes #hula #bookstodon

Let’s talk about the word ʻōkole! My kumu says that it means “anus” in Hawaiian. It seems to be common usage as “butt” in Hawaiian flavored English/Pidgin? But kumu says don’t use that word speaking Hawaiian unless you want to refer specifically to the anus. If you want to say “butt” you should use ʻēlemu instead. #jasminIolaniHakes

I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook, beautifully read by Mapuana Makia, and I was delighted that the author drops a lot of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi into the prose. And I was tickled that I detected one grammatical error: when the kumu hula asks “Ua maopopo iā ʻoe?” (“Did you understand?”) she should have used ʻoukou (plural form) rather than ʻoe (singular) since she’s addressing the entire class. #jasminIolaniHakes

I recently read the novel Hula, by Jasmin ʻIolani Hakes, and I have a few things to say about it from the point of view of a Hawaiian language learner, so stay tuned over the next few days! #jasminIolani #jasminIolaniHakes
