Well if it isn't obvious already, I love fighter aircraft. I've also come to really enjoy plane model kits. After perusing some cool model kits and custom LEGO builds, I was inspired to make a list of my favourite modern fighter aircraft. Consider it a "wishlist" of sorts.

1. Saab JAS 39 Gripen E/F

Canards... Small... Short takeoffs and landings... Easy maintenance... Dispersed operations... The F variant has room for a Friend :3

As much as I hate it, I do actually like the F-35. A decent looking bird with a lot of cool tech. The A variant is the best all-around version but come on, who doesn't love a good "droop toot"?

Special mention

The F-22 Raptor was my favourite fighter aircraft when I was younger. It was new and rad looking at the time, but I've since grown apart from it. I find the F-35 to look juuuust a tad nicer and with a lot more cool stuff going on. I still have a soft spot for the F-22 though. It kinda looks like a puppy, of death :3

A hangar for each plane. I’m relieved both managed to fit perfectly between the walls of the shelf. I was concerned for a moment there. Maybe some hangar decoration is in order.

The Gripen has some breathing room but the MiG-29 fits a bit more snugly. Anything much bigger than COBI’s MiG-29 model kit, such as the De Havilland DH-98 Mosquito, won’t fit between the walls of the shelf. That is, unless you plop it on top of the bookshelf…

Just look at the two birds next to each other. Both are single-seat lightweight fighter jets. However, that’s where their similarities end. Two different eras fulfilling similar but different tasks with different avionics and weapons.

Gripenposting

Modern, sexy, and deadly in combat. Swift, compact, reliable, and relatively affordable. Just a refreshing update to an already great aircraft. The idea of stealthily deploying a Gripen from a remote airfield or highway out in the taiga of northern Europe is such a ~vibe~.

To me, the Gripen feels like the polar opposite of the financial and technological boondoggle that is the F-35. Maybe with time we'll forget the troubles that plagued the F-35, much like we've forgotten the Gripen's troubled start in the 1980s and 1990s. Over time, the Gripen proved itself to be a capable aircraft the Swedish people can be proud of.
