This creature is Zuki. She belongs to my housemates. She is… um…
Well, let’s put it this way. When my housemates’ now-adult daughter was younger she begged and begged PLEEEEASE could they get a dog? She would look after it and walk it and train it and and and…
Reader, she did not do these things.
Zuki barks at everything, all the time. She’s menacingly territorial to visitors. She wees on the floor when excited. She won’t let anyone brush her. She runs away at the slightest opportunity. She’s jealous of my housemates’ other cats, and will snarl and snap at them if they’re getting attention and she’s not. She chases Clancy if they’re both out in the garden at the same time, and freaks out when she sees Clancy through my bedroom window. (Meanwhile, Clancy sits on her cat tree sneering at Zuki, unperturbed.)
When I first moved in, I thought I would try to make friends with Zuki using treats. She just sniffed them and went “meh.” Sometimes since then I’ve tried to reward her for good behaviour, but it’s hard to do that if she just isn’t into what you’re offering.
But today… today… OH GLORIOUS DAY! I have discovered a treat that Zuki actually likes.
I was making stock, and I offered her a shred of meat off the bones, and she went nuts for it. Over the course of a dozen more little shreds, we got to the point where she’d sit, stay as I backed up across the room, then come when called.
A new era has begun!
