Back in Bizen ware land today, visiting ceramic artist Koyama Atsuko in Inbe. She does these really fascinating twists and bends in her tokkuri, along with great expressions of common Bizenyaki character.
Lunch was at Udo, the cafe in the station, which serves great food and coffee, on/in Bizenyaki, of course .
Tokyo area folks, my very talented potter friend Hadano Hideo is exhibiting April 3-8 at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Honten. He does traditionally elegant Hagiyaki as well as more original, creative work.
親友の萩焼陶芸家波多野英生さんが日本橋三越で陶展する。4月3日〜8日までです。都合があったら、見に行ってください!
This small shrimp features on a vase made by Japanese potter Miyagawa Hanzan.
Made between 1925 – 1940 from thrown stoneware, this vase features engraved and modelled decoration, partly covered with a green celadon. Isn’t it wonderful!

My new thing is "sake ware is not just for nihonshu."
A katakuchi pourer by Yamane Seigan full of Nishikigawa Kasutori Shochu and a "sumiyaki" cup by Kondo Mamoru full of ice and soda.
A match made in heaven.

More practice shots. This time a study in contrasts.
These are both by the same potter, Yagi Hiroyuki, using the same clay. The tokkuri is unglazed yakushime with a natural ash-fall spray, what is called goma. The guinomi uses a straw-ash applied glaze and shows off some lovely red yohen (kiln change).
They both use a standard Hagi ware clay mix (Daito/Mitake/Mishima clay), but the guinomi has a real Karatsu ware feel to it.

*Spoken for! Thanks.*
I'm getting rid of some sake cups (ochoko) and a tokkuri flask. Nothing spectacular, but there's some Hagiyaki in there, and some very pretty random stuff. Also a branded tokkuri and ochoko set from a Hagi brewery, Nakamura Shuzo.
Let me know if you're interested before I put them on Yahoo Auction.
I'm thinking 2500 yen, shipping by Yamato included, but feel free to make an offer.

Today's study: Inside Japanese Ceramics by Richard L. Wilson.
A goddamn treasure. It's perfect for getting a truly solid base in the subject. The very technical sections aimed at potters can quickly be skimmed or skipped by those not looking to know, for example, glaze recipes.

Hm. I picked up a little light box at Daiso and it might actually have been worth the 550 yen.
This tokkuri (sake flask) is made from Hagi-yaki clay but has a natural ash-glaze making for fascinating texture.
When you go drinking with the world's leading Japanese pottery authority, you had better make sure your grip is steady.
One of these cups cost more than my car.
Clockwise from top: Momoyama period karatsu cup, mingei cup by Hamada Shoji, Bizenyaki cup by Rosanjin.

Quite the before/after.
I shaped them on the wheel, but it feels like all the hard work was what came after...
(Here they are, @Chanclatrix )
What a beauty! Hagi clay with natural ash glaze. By Yagi Hiroyuki 八木博幸 of Shinkai-gama kiln 伸塊窯.
