  6. Here are 10 things you should know about Mikio Naruse, born 120 years ago today. He isn’t as well-known as some other directors of classic Japanese cinema, but we greatly admire his quiet, well-crafted dramas. #OldMovies #ClassicMovies #ClassicJapaneseCinema #JapaneseCinema

  9. I watched a really enjoyable #Japanese movie called Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes.

It's basically about a guy who discovers a two minute lag between two laptop webcams, and very quickly discovers he can have conversations with himself, with his future self revealing things about the future 2 minutes ahead.

It's called a #ScieneFiction comedy, but really it's just a playful take on time travel. The characters take this simple premise then expand upon it, taking the two minute future/past scenario further, with pleasing results.

Strangely, many of the scenes are replayed from a different perspective but they don't feel repetitive or become tiresome. Pretty much everything is foreshadowed as well, so the sense of peril is diminished, but it's still very enjoyable and somehow it doesn't matter.

What drives the film forward is how it takes you through the time travel logic. It's complex but not difficult to follow. It all seems carefully thought out and you could sit and carefully work it all out in your head (I didn't) but it's playful enough to make you think you don't need to scrutinise it too much.

And it's all set in one location in a shop/office building. It's all neat, simple and contained, and it's contained within 70 mins.

    It's a good film.

  15. How much of a difference can one person make alone? Kurosawa doesn’t give us the answer, but he makes us ask this question through Watanabe. His dedication is quietly powerful. Everybody knows what truly matters and who makes a difference. Even after admitting it and promising to become better people, his colleagues can’t truly change. Kurosawa’s realism cuts deep; the swing scene brought me to tears.

There's no chance any of us will approach the filmmaker's genius, but understanding the creative DNA of his work might provide you some new and unexpected tools of your own.
