On day 8 of my first Japan trip 20 years ago, I took a train from Shinjuku Station to Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture, where I walked around town and explored the magnificent Matsumoto Castle (one of Japan’s "three great castles" alongside those in Himeji and Kumamoto).

In this set of photos from 2009, we are at Matsuyama Castle in Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku. During our visit, we pretty much hit the peak of that year’s cherry blossom season for the approx. 200 trees on the premises. The castle is one of Japan's twelve "original castles", having survived the post-feudal era since 1868 intact.
