  3. Not much love for Svankmajer here, but I'll recommend one stop-motion short for anyone who's curious: Darkness, Light, Darkness (1989). It's funny, a bit rude, quite brilliant. 7 min.

  4. A lot of his short films are available on YouTube, etc., but the quality is often poor. Svankmajer's work is highly rewatchable, and there's a couple of good box sets available

  5. Had a binge of Svankmajer short films. Saw a few I hadn't seen before, but my favourites are more or less unchanged: Darkness, Light, Darkness; Dimensions of Dialogue; Down to the Cellar; Virile Games, A Game with Stones; The Garden

  6. Just a Jan Švankmajer print propped up in an art bookshop in Prague.

  7. “Faust” (1994) is loosely based on on plays “Faust” by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Available Here: archive.org/details/faustgoeth) and “The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus” by Christopher Marlowe (Availble here: archive.org/details/tragicalhi), which are based on the German legend.

  8. Similar to our first ever #LaEsoterica feature “Alice”/“ Něco z Alenky” (1988), “Faust”/“Lekce Faust” (1994) is comprised of a combination of live action acting, puppetry & various forms of animation (stop motion, claymation, etc)

  9. And now our feature presentation: “Faust”/“Lekce Faust” (1994) directed by Czechoslovakian artist and animator Jan Švankmajer (youtu.be/P4O3fYwYPW0?si=GuG3R6)

  10. Our final feature presentation is one of Jan Švankmajer’s most famous shorts: “Jabberwocky” (1971) (youtu.be/8F1anpTxkmQ?si=vTQCz2)

  11. As far as I’m concerned the no parts of a Švankmajer film are actually silent because I can hear is my heart pounding

  12. @rsmon77 True.. like, are you even watching a Jan Švankmajer film if you’re not sitting nearly frozen in fear of what horrors the next frame will bring ?
    #LaEsoterica #JanSvankmajer

  13. “Byt” AKA “The Flat” (1968) (youtu.be/pBNK4gB4QUQ?si=gwecYy) is straight up horror and features a mix of live action and stop motion. All three elements that Švankmajer would later use in films like “Alice” (1988), “Faust” (1994) and “Little Otik” (2000)

  14. Listen you can’t have a Švankmajer film without at least one creepy thing happening, okay?
    #LaEsoterica #PicknickMitWeismann #JanSvankmajer

  15. “Et Cetera” (1967) takes its inspiration from ancient petroglyphs and scroll art and is about the absurdity of man’s control. It’s one of Švankmajer’s few films that uses elements of traditional animation.

  16. Our second feature is a collection of early career shorts by Jan Švankmajer (youtu.be/GWTx_r9bCdc?si=iAtR_x). Again, there aren’t any subtitles but there’s also essentially no dialogue so you don’t really need them.

  17. And now our first feature presentation: “The Last Trick” by Czechoslovakian artist and animator Jan Švankmajer (youtu.be/ZHlF2iULcuc?si=ZF-yXg). A combination of stop motion and live action slackstick, it’s his first film.

  18. Next, we have “Picnic with Weissmann” (1968) directed by Czech master of stop motion and #LaEsoterica mainstay Jan Švankmajer.

  19. Back to my favourite coffee shop, Stooge in Hastings❤️ and getting the opportunity to expand my mind as they have a shelf full of books to read while having a drink. #books #transgender #animation #jansvankmajer #stooge #stoogecoffeeshop

  20. Jan Švankmajer, known for his surrealist films with stop motion animation, including Dimensions of Dialogue, Alice, Darkness/Light/Darkness, Food, Faust, and Conspirators of Pleasure #JanSvankmajer #JanŠvankmajer #surrealism #film #animation #movies #cinema #films #movie #Czech #surrealist #stopmotionanimation
