There are remarkable parallels between Pride and Prejudice and Edward Gibbon Wakefield.
Jane Austen started writing P&P in 1796, the year Wakefield was born.
The villainous Wickham plots to elope to Gretna Green with the 15 year old heiress Georgiana Darcy.
The villainous Wakefield eloped to Gretna Green with the 15 year old heiress Ellen Turner.Wickham hopes to get his hands on Miss Darcy's £30,000.
Wakefield would have got £30,000 through his first wife Eliza Pattle, had she survived to her 21st birthday.Unlike Eliza and Georgiana (and Lydia Bennet), Ellen's consent was obtained unwillingly and by deception. Wakefield claimed that only by marrying him could she save her father from (completely fictional) financial ruin. The marriage was subsequently dissolved by a special act of Parliament.
Readers speculate as to what various characters' futures might have held after the end of the book. Might Wickham's have included both prison and Parliament, as it did for Wakefield?

"I am glad I have done being in love with him. I should not like a man who is so soon discomposed by a hot morning”.

Finis!
5/5 stars. If I didn't already have this on my own shelf, I would endeavour to have it included. So strange to find a story from over 200 years ago so relatable.

In Jane Austen's novels, anyone with even a minor title is almost inevitably a buffoon and/or a villain. Her writing was aggressively anti-aristocratic, focussed on the provincial gentry (bourgeoisie).
Contemporary Austen-tribute books and series — e.g. "Regency-Core" like Bridgerton, where the leads are aristocratic lords and ladies —entirely miss the point.

Jane Austen's satire anticipated NotAllMen by over two centuries:
I will only add in justice to men, that though to the larger and more trifling part of the sex, imbecility in females is a great enhancement of their personal charms, there is a portion of them too reasonable and too well-informed themselves to desire anything more in women than ignorance.
— Northanger Abbey (1799, publ. 1817)

Zum Zitatenmontag ein Ausschnitt aus „Mister Bennet“ – das Erbe der Bennet-Schwestern ist klein; ihre Heiratschancen sind demnach nicht glänzend. Dem kann abgeholfen werden.

My Endearment game arrived! Yes I went for the fully Extra version. I am a huge Jane Austen girlie, and the fact that there is a solo play mode convinced me.

#JaneAustenJuly 2026 What I’ll be reading
We’re again at #JaneAustenJuly. This year, I’ll be (re)reading Emma and the non-fiction A Portrait of Jane Austen by David Cecil, published in 1978, that some dear friends gift me recently from their visit to Hay-on-Wye (yes, the Book Town).
You can check my past post with direct links to all the works of Jane Austen from Project Gutenberg, that you can read anywhere. If you have a Kobo, you may prefer the kepub format (statistics and so on), so here’s the link to Austen’s works at Standard Ebooks.
What will you be reading for #JaneAustenJuly? :-)

“La! I cannot believe you would do something so unladylike, Lizzy.”
“We must try very hard not to be seen.”
“Just see if you can keep up with me.”Here's a scene from Aether and Ego, my steampunk retelling of Pride and Prejudice set in 1845 outer space. The picture is adapted from one by Hugh Thomson, a Victorian-era Irish artist who was best known for his pen-and-ink line drawings in re-issues of classic novels and plays, including all of Jane Austen’s novels.
His illustration that I’ve adapted for my novel in this time-lapse “making of” video comes from the 1894 edition from publisher George Allen, with the famous peacock cover in forest green stamped in gold.

The new Sense and Sensibility trailer is here, but many fans are revisiting Rajiv Menon's Kandukondain Kandukondain. Here's why the Tamil classic remains one of the best Jane Austen adaptations. https://english.mathrubhumi.com/movies-music/why-kandukondain-kandukondain-is-still-better-than-other-sense-and-sensibility-adaptations-p7tethyk?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #SenseAndSensibility #KandukondainKandukondain #JaneAusten

In 1922 #Boston, an amateur theatrical group debuted an original work, "Dear Jane", one of the first fictional depictions of #JaneAusten; it was written by Eleanor Holmes Hinkley (1891-1971, TS Eliot's cousin) and directed by Virginia Tanner Green (1881-1950); both #Radcliffe alums, and both have new #wikipedia articles now. #Theatre #Austen @wikiwomeninred
