Cops in Brasilia have been arrested for allowing the attempted Jan. 8 coup to take place because they agreed with the would-be putschists. Who could've seen that coming?
====
"Federal Police agents on Friday arrested the commander of the Brasilia local police and six other officers as part of an investigation into their omissions during the January 8 riots, when several thousand pro-Bolsonaro radicals stormed and ransacked the buildings of the three branches of government in Brazil's capital.
The Prosecutor General's Office today also charged the seven officers with the crimes of omission, violent attack on the rule of law, attempted coup d'etat, and crimes related to damage to public property. According to the investigation, a group within the Brasilia police 'has shown itself to have adopted conspiracy theories about electoral fraud.'"

CW: Defend democracy; subversive public enemies are not "conservatives"
@TheConversationUS As a person, who's working to subvert the existing democratic constitutional order not only of the United States, Bannon cannot be categorized as "conservative".
He's a global traveler on behalf of destabilizing & subverting democratic systems of government, be it in North America, South America, Europe or other regions.#RuleOfLaw #DefendDemocracy #Democracy #Counterintelligence #NationalSecurity #Insurrection #Jan6 #Jan8

@allthebrazilianpolitics If these people committed terrorist acts, what do you call the individuals, who incited them to feel free to commit acts of terrorism?

@stephenjudkins Seems like the main concern would be a Brazilian fleeing the US back to Brazil to avoid US charges. But if they're not Brazilian, then Google, Esq. says they could be extradited either direction to face charges for #jan8.

@Raven47
I woke up from a nap and found out that forces from Chile might step in. Still catching up on this developing story. I wonder what the Brazilian RWNJs on the bird site are saying? 🤪 I can read a bit of Portuguese without translation. Will also check what serious journalists are saying also, if I can find any. 🇧🇷 #Jan8 #Brazil -
Supporters of Brazilian far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro have stormed Congress as well as the presidential palace and the Supreme Court. His backers have refused to accept leftist Lula's election victory.
After hours of chaos, Brazilian police have retaken the National Congress building after pro-Bolsonaro protesters stormed the building. Police are still in the process of clearing rioters from the Supreme Court headquarters and Planalto presidential palace.
Brazil's Chief Justice Rosa Weber on Sunday said the country's Supreme Court will work to ensure that "terrorists" were made an "example" of.
Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the National Congress building in Brasilia earlier on Sunday.
Hundreds of people invaded the building, calling for military intervention to overthrow President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Lula was inaugurated one week ago.
Supporters of the former president refuse to accept that the populist autocrat lost his bid for reelection, claiming the election was stolen.

#OTD in 1811, the German Coast Uprising began in Louisiana. This slave rebellion is thought to be the largest in US history, involving hundreds of participants who attacked and burned 5 plantations over 2 days. Like all US slave rebellions, this one ended unsuccessfully, and slavery remains legal there. In 2019 artist Dread Scott organized a reenactment of the march (link and photo below):
