Don't sleep on the new Messthetics & JBL album. The band is tighter, more ferocious, and more willing to let the muse take charge of the music in their improvisational flights. Most importantly, it sounds like they had a blast cutting it. A fantastic next step for this iteration of the band.

The album is inspired by the works of Amiri Baraka and Don Cherry, blending elements of jazz, hip-hop, and funk. It includes 11 tracks, all collectively and spontaneously composed over two improvised sessions, showcasing the trio's dynamic interplay and Lewis's powerful tenor saxophone playing.

If I hadn't gone and heard a recording of the Messthetics & James Brandon Lewis set, I'd be kicking things. Get in the room if you can. JBL and Pirog played mind-meld tight leads and fed off each other on noisy moments of improv. Joe and Brendan are rhythmically synced like only decades of playing together can create. And the energy was the kind that only a hometown show at the end of tour can bring. 3/🧵
