  3. RIP James “Blood” Ulmer

Back in the late 90s I got wise to Ornette Coleman and his harmolodic phase; a concept that is equal parts avant-garde jazz with an attitude that is punk as hell, and influenced a lot of great artists, mostly in NYC, who pushed an immense number of boundaries. One of those people is James "Blood" Ulmer, who played with Coleman, and then carved out a wildly careening path since. He passed away this week, at 86, and leaves an influential if obscure (to the general public), legacy. NPR did a […]

My favourite major label-backed 80s jazz artist? Hands down, it would be #ArthurBlythe. He wove a huge, breathtaking sound on #LennonAvenueBreakdown, drawing from trad swing, bebop, r&b, AfroCuban jazz, free jazz and beyond. “Odessa” is my pick of the bunch, what with its mysterious Eastern European motif and amazing #JamesBloodUlmer solo. But the whole album and his later Blythe Spirit and Illusions LPs are beautiful, inspired works that still stand tall.

  8. Now spinning at my house, intense beauty that has sustained me for years:

#Odyssey by #JamesBloodUlmer from 1983...a trio of Ulmer (guitar, vocals), Warren Benbow (drums), Charles Burnham (electric violin) playing a song cycle of jazz, rock, blues, country, mesmerizing drones

  9. Now spinning, in honor of his 83rd birthday yesterday:

America—Do You Remember The Love? by #JamesBloodUlmer, the visionary harmolodic jazz blues guitarist...this LP is a soulful six-song set recorded with Bill Laswell on bass & Ronald Shannon Jackson on drums. HBD, JBU!---mrb
