Een nadeel van ouder worden is dat je vergroeit met je verleden en er meer moeite mee hebt maatschappelijke veranderingen te volgen. Er komt een moment dat je de apps op je smartphone niet meer aankunt. Gelukkig hebben we jongere generaties die zich engageren voor de samenleving en een groter deel van de last dragen om vorm te geven aan de toekomst.
Maar soms doet iemand een luikje open dat de grijsaard een welkom uitzicht biedt op wat zich tijdens zijn leven aan anderen heeft voltrokken. Zo Lofti El Hamidi, tot februari 2025 chef van de opinieredactie van NRC, in een artikel ten afscheid van het dagblad. Hij schrijft over de impact van 9/11 op de tienerjaren van iemand van allochtone afkomst en over de emancipatie die een heel volksdeel wordt onthouden vanwege het vooroordeel van de blanke meerderheid, die liever spreekt van integratie. El Hamidi vertrekt naar de redactie van de Groene Amsterdammer.
“Het is [de] postkoloniale blik op de genocidale oorlog in Gaza die op de nieuwsredacties (ja ook bij NRC) tot ongemak leidt”, schrijft hij. “Generaties, referentiekaders en wereldbeelden botsen. Oudere collega’s die zijn opgevoed met de bijna vanzelfsprekende solidariteit met het ‘kleine dappere’ Israël. Die de morele opdracht van na de oorlog – ‘nooit meer’ – met zich meedragen, als plichtsbesef. Maar als dat je enige referentiekader is, dan ontstaan er blinde vlekken.” Ook daar dus ongemak, op de redacties van grote, gevestigde nieuwsmedia.
En, schrijft El Hamidi, “je kunt van mensen niet verwachten dat zij het grootste morele vraagstuk van het moment parkeren alsof het om een persoonlijke preoccupatie gaat. Gaza is voor deze generatie wat Algerije en Vietnam waren in de jaren zestig. Een ‘neutrale’ houding is een uitvlucht.” Wat het grootste morele vraagstuk is van het moment, is een kwestie van beleving, maar het is duidelijk wat dit voor El Hamidi en vele, vele anderen is. En dat deze beleving een morele kwestie betreft, is een treffende typering. Het trekt woorden als ‘genocidaal’ uit de sfeer van de feitelijkheid het domein van de openbare meningsvorming in.
In de beleving is Gaza voor de huidige generatie misschien wat de oorlogen in Algerije en Vietnam waren, al is de vraag wie precies tot de huidige generatie worden gerekend. Weet je iets van Algerije en Vietnam wanneer je rond de eeuwwisseling bent geboren? En als je er iets van weet, dan zou je moeten beseffen dat de historische vergelijking enigszins mank gaat. De oorlog om de onafhankelijkheid van Frankrijks kolonie Algerije en die tussen Noord- en Zuid-Vietnam en hun bondgenoten kostten ieder honderdduizenden, zo niet miljoenen slachtoffers. Het waren territoriale oorlogen, niet de ‘urban warfare’ in de verstedelijkte omgeving van de Gazastrook. De oorlog daar lijkt meer op de strijd in Falluja tijdens de Irak-oorlog, eveneens een aaneenschakeling van operaties om opstandelingen te onderdrukken.
Moraal en de feiten hebben een moeizame verhouding. Wie opkomt voor de feiten, wordt er algauw van verdacht geen morele verontwaardiging te kennen. Zijn beide tegelijk dan niet mogelijk? In een gelijktijdig verschenen interview van een Britse krant met Jake Sullivan, vier jaar lang de nationale veiligheidsadviseur van president Joe Biden, drukt deze zich over de Gaza-oorlog behoedzaam uit: “There was immense human suffering in Gaza, and so for me to sit here and say, ‘No, no, it all went great,’ would display a total lack of human empathy. On the other hand, the idea of cutting weapons off from Israel when they were taking incoming from several fronts all at once . . . I’m not sure how I could have justified that. So, it’s hard.” Empathie voor het immense lijden en begrip voor Israëls recht op zelfverdediging in een meerfrontenoorlog gaan hier hand in hand.
Wat Sullivan wel weet, en El Hamidi met zoveel andere mensen van thans levende generaties na tachtig jaar vrede op het grootste gedeelte van het Europese continent niet, is wat zelfverdediging in antwoord op militaire provocaties inhoudt. Zijn wij in dit deel van de wereld zo ingeslapen en decadent geraakt, als waarvoor president Vladimir Poetin ons houdt? Of zijn tegenvoeter, president Donald Trump, aanstaande juni nu wel of niet op de NAVO-top in Den Haag verschijnt, onze jongere landgenoten zullen opkijken van de nieuwe werkelijkheid wanneer de Verenigde Staten de Europese bondgenoten in een diplomatiek onderhandelingsspel tot een verhoging van de defensie-uitgaven bewegen. Met een kort tijdpad, om het getreuzel van meer dan tien jaar na de Russische annexatie van de Krim te voorkomen.
Iedere verhoging brengt het einde dichterbij van de opschorting van de militaire dienstplicht, voor mannen én voor vrouwen. Of dit goed is, of moreel verantwoord, is een tweede. Maar de emancipatie van mensen met een immigratie-achtergrond zou er wel bij kunnen varen wanneer zij zij aan zij met leden van de blanke meerderheid dienen. Het collectief vóór het individu. Een deel zou samen met troepen van andere Europese nationaliteiten als vredeshandhavers een veertienhonderd kilometer lange bestandslijn kunnen bewaken, wanneer Russische en Oekraïense delegaties een staakt-het-vuren overeen mochten komen. Een ander deel zou het strategisch gelegen en mineralenrijke Groenland kunnen beveiligen tegen vreemde mogendheden. Dit is wat volgens politieke bronnen op dit ogenblik in Europese hoofdsteden in stilte wordt gewikt en gewogen. We zullen zien wat er al dan niet van komt.
Inderdaad, generaties, referentiekaders en wereldbeelden, ze kunnen flink botsen. Wie komt er ongeschonden uit de maalstroom van dit krachtenspel?

Weet je iets van Algerije en Vietnam wanneer je rond de eeuwwisseling bent geboren? En als je er iets van weet, dan zou je moeten beseffen dat de historische vergelijking enigszins mank gaat. De oorlog om de onafhankelijkheid van Frankrijks kolonie Algerije en die tussen Noord- en Zuid-Vietnam en hun bondgenoten kostten ieder honderdduizenden, zo niet miljoenen slachtoffers.
