Guys. I have a problem. Left is vanilla, original version of the game. Right is the 1.13 big giant mod that adds a shit ton of more stuff.
It's just been like 2 months. According to this I first launched the game on June 23rd.
And this post was drafted... The screenshot is out of date. v1.13 is up to 198h 23m
Help... I can't stop playing. The amount of "just one more turn" is killing me.

So, I've REALLY taken to Jagged Alliance 2. Still doing my first vanilla playthrough (84 hours and counting), but I liked the game so much I set up a second install with the v1.13 mod and have used that to write my own mod and turned my 1.13 game into a sort of background idle game.
I am playing my 1.13 install without using ANY time compression. When I am done and waiting, I just have my IMP merc sit in a sector and keep the game focused on them, causing the clock to advance in real-time. So, while troops are moving, healing, doing anything that takes hours in game, I am waiting those real-time hours. It's completely changing the way I experience the game.
Right now some of my mercs are really hurt and will likely be out of commission for days. I need to be more careful in the future.
While I'm waiting, I can open up my vanilla install and play Jagged Alliance 2 while I'm playing Jagged Alliance 2.... insert Xzibit meme here.
I mentioned that I made my own mod. I coded in something to make my real-time experience a little more casual. I made it so that every 24 hours, if a mercenary died, they become available to hire again. It basically revives them... but the game still retains any injuries they may have incurred while dying. So, getting shot in the head and losing 18 points of wisdom? Yup... they still lost them, AND I lost all the money, AND I still took the reputation hit of having them die... plus I have to wait real time days for them to become available again, and for them to arrive back in Arulco, and for them to get equipped and back to work.
But since I'm reviving mercs, I figured I'd play the game with the optional v1.13 zombie mod. If my people can come back, I guess all of my opponents can come back too. Arulco is a crazy background sandbox idle game for me and I'm having a blast.

Jagged Alliance was release 30 years ago on 15th April 1995.

I was quite curious about #JaggedAlliance 2 when it came out 25 years ago, but somehow I never got around to trying it out until now.
This game is amazing.
This is literally peak 90s. (Though more early 90s than late 90s.)
At character creation for a female mercenary leader, the game had me on board with the first question!

#UFOEnemyUnknown or #JaggedAlliance?
For me, UFO for sure is the much more intricate, detailed, deep game. But those tactical battles just take *so* long! Plus, Jagged Alliance's mercenaries have a lot more character. What's your take?

Platz 7:

I'm looking forward to this one as well. I skipped all the other #JaggedAlliance games between JA2 and now, but this one appears to be really good.

Jagged Alliance 2 (one of my all time favs):
-
The more I engage with game design, the more I notice some disastrous ideas that keep turning games with great potential into "great idea, poor gameplay" for decades.
Today's highlights include:
1. Potions and buffs, which are ways to reset and/or replace game state by consuming other resources, sometimes repeatedly. The #EvilIslands and #NWN suffer significantly from this issue. The primary reason I stopped participating in otherwise amazing story-focused modern #NWN community #EFU is this mechanic. Also having a life and a job. But mostly potions and buffs.
2. Dramatic progression, where end-game characters have quantifiably greater capabilities than early game ones. Scaling up both enemies and characters creates artificial barriers for creative gameplay. I appreciate #JaggedAlliance's progression, which features only a 15% difference in crucial stats between the end-game and the first day of your first mission.
Unfortunately, both issues have deeply infiltrated #TTRPG game design, including the most popular TTRPG, which shall remain unnamed.
Another abstract game design mistake is forcing players to make decisions without clearly explaining the rules.
This problem worsens in games with dramatic progression. Players must create "a build" to avoid irrelevance due to dramatic progression, relying on vague descriptions of decision outcomes. #Fallout suffers immensely from this issue.
This problem can also apply to narrative games. The reason I didn't enjoy #BrokenSword as much as anticipated and am close to dropping #BeneathTheSteelSky is that these games' premises break during play.
Broken Sword starts as noir detective with bombs, evolving into a wishy-washy modern fantasy with spells and rituals. "Steel Sky" starts as dystopian drama but devolves into cringe comedy. Sherlock Holmes games feature mysticism, and don't get me started on the TTRPG offenders: the likes of #DeltaGreen and other #Cthulhu-adjacent games. Imagine having omnipotent entities as villains, while mortals are trying to solve crimes... Spoiler: the killer is a Cthulhu.

@jonn i'll second that thought of playing #jaggedalliance (the second one, please), haven't touched it since... maybe five or even seven years i think.
if you do, give #stracciatella a nudge (it's a modern cross-platform rewrite, must have imho):
https://ja2-stracciatella.github.io/
however, «hard west» is a better ja2 in so many ways; so if shooting virtual baddies is not a strict taboo for you (and i just guess it's not, ja2?), give it a try. the story alone might surprise you, it's top notch.

In no particular order:
#Tetris
#SuperPacMan
#BlackDesert
#AdvanceGuardianHeroes
#Astrosmash
#Silkworm
#KatamariDamacy
#FinalFantasyTactics
#JaggedAlliance
#MasterOfOrionII
#CivilizationCallToPowerYeah, I know, that's eleven. I couldn't. It was hard enough not putting #Frostbite on there. EDIT: I swapped out #FightNRage because DUH, there's another brawler that NEEDS to be there.
