Bernard Charbonneau was raised in the Bordeaux bourgeoisie. He obtained his agrégation in 1935.
In 1945, he decided not to pursue an academic career and, ‘eager to live in the countryside, he obtained a position at a small teacher training college in the Pyrenean foothills, in Lescar, France, where he remained until his retirement’. (written by Daniel Cérézuelle, in ‘Ecology and Freedom: Bernard Charbonneau: Pioneer of Political Ecology’, Lyon, Parangon/Vs, coll. ‘après-développement’, 2006)
He viewed technical progress as the source of ever-increasing organisation, and therefore greater conformity, hence less freedom. He was a close friend of Jacques Ellul for six decades.

Bernard Charbonneau a été élevé dans la bourgeoisie bordelaise. Il a obtenu l’agrégation en 1935.
En 1945, il décide de ne pas faire de carrière universitaire et "désireux de vivre à la campagne, il se fait nommer dans une petite école normale d'instituteurs du Piémont pyrénéen, à Lescar, près de Pau, où il reste jusqu'à sa retraite." (écrit Daniel Cérézuelle, in "Écologie et liberté : Bernard Charbonneau : précurseur de l'écologie politique", Lyon, Parangon/Vs, coll. « après-développement », 2006)
Il voyait dans le progrès technique la source de toujours plus d'organisation, donc de plus de conformisme, donc de moins de liberté. Il a été l'ami intime de Jacques Ellul durant six décennies.

I recommend reading #JacquesEllul "Le fascisme, fils du libéralisme" ("Fascism, son of Liberalism, 1937).
Ellul was an eye-witness of fascism in Italy, Germany and Spain. He argued that fascism is a method, not an ideology, a technology of the social. By using industrial organization methods it turns a society into a totalitarian enterprise.

I've grown interested in the technologies of the social - not only cybernetics, but also, e.g., propaganda. Recently I've come across Jacques Ellul's writings.
Ellul's 1965 book "Propaganda - The Formation of Men's Attitudes" looks very promising:
seeding minds with incoherent education (pre-propaganda !), building blocks for beliefs that I'm susceptible for.
I feel seen.
