The Knives: A Criminal Book | Comic Review
Confession: I’ve never read an Ed Brubaker book until now. Sure, he’s one of the most famous comic book writers of all time, but it’s just never been a thing for me at this point. That all is going to change after reading The Knives: A Criminal Book.

I never read comic books as a kid. Of course, I knew who many of the characters were thanks to various animated shows, movies, and video games. I only knew comics as superhero books. I didn’t know there was anything else.
Color me surprised when as a teenager I learned that there were comic books out there that weren’t about superheros. Now, as an adult, I get to read awesome books like The Knives: A Criminal Book.
The Knives tells the decade-long, interconnected tale involving Jacob Kurtz, Angie, and Tracy Lawless. Do you like Hollywood? Do you like seedy bars? Do you like war veterans who are unable to leave the war behind? Yes? Do I have the book for you!
Brubaker’s storytelling here to weave everything together is top notch. I wasn’t sure how things were going to coalesce into a singular narrative, but he nailed it. The art from Sean Phillip and Jacob Phillips really brought this story to life while letting things still feel difficult and the answers opaque.
Now that I know about the Criminal series, I’m going to check out more of them. I’ve already added the books to my library list.

Early impressions...
Jacob Phillips' art looks a lot like his father Sean's. Jacob's isn't as good yet, but he is good.
The writing is just ok. Clunky expository dialog bums me out, but to be fair I know Zdarsky has to cover a lot of ground quickly.
Overall: feels like a less polished Ed Brubaker/Sean Phillips book. -
