July 21, 2026"Jackie, the rescued bald eagle and mate of Shadow from Big Bear, is underweight, alert, perching and eating with assistance, according to the Ojai Raptor Center.
"The center delivered that message to Friends of Big Bear Valley, who reported on Monday that the Ventura County-based rehab center had not yet received Jackie’s medical test results, but was expected to within the next couple of days.
"On Tuesday, FOBBV shared an update from the Ojai Raptor Center, saying personnel there are awaiting test results for signs of #lead, #zinc, or rodenticide levels.
"#Rodenticides are pesticides that kill a variety of rodents, according to the National Pesticide Information Center.
"The most common route of exposure to lead for birds, especially in eagles, is through ingestion of spent lead #ammunition fragments and #FishingTackle, according to the #Cornell #Wildlife Health Lab.
"High zinc levels in birds are often caused by the ingestion of lead, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual.
" 'Jackie is anemic and has inflammation affecting her kidneys,' FOBBV said. “They are unsure of the underlying issue causing these symptoms. The center is working with several specialist veterinarians to determine the best supportive care for the moment.'
"FOBBV was also told that Jackie has more energy and 'is mad and fighting. That’s our Jackie, a strong and mighty eagle!' "

A famous pair of eagles in California has hatched two chicks earlier this year that finally took flight last weekend.

Published Jun 30, 2026"#FriendsOfBigBearValley in California confirmed Monday that #LunaAndSandy, chicks of its famous eagles Jackie and Shadow, had both left the nest for the first time this year.
"At 11:24 a.m. Sunday, Luna attempted to jump over Sandy, but didn't clear her. Sandy fell a few branches down, but then took her first flight at 11:30 a.m.
" 'Monday morning at 9:24:43 cam time,' Friends of #BigBearValley wrote, 'Luna took the leap of faith and, in beautiful form, flew gracefully over to the tree where Shadow was waiting for him. No hesitation, he just knew he could do it!' "

Jackie & Shadow's second clutch of eggs have both hatched! (The first clutch broke/were eaten by ravens.) They hatched really close together, so they're a similar size, and both aggressive so far, so I can never tell which one is older. Both doing well so far, and getting lots of food and protection, of course.

Egg number 2 in clutch number 2 has arrived! Jackie laid her second egg just before her bedtime tonight, right on time for her regular schedule of laying them 3 days apart. Hooray for another chance at a successful season this year for Jackie & Shadow.

Jackie & Shadow's season has officially started! Jackie laid her first egg a couple of days ago, and Shadow made sure to get a good look at it when he came by for a visit later. This is the nest that got me hooked on bird nest live cams, so I'm excited to start a new season with them again.

“We are sad to let everyone know that 1 of Jackie & Shadow’s chicks did not make it through the severe winter storm that brought over 2' of snow to the area. The chick’s passing happened some time after all 3 were observed together getting fed at 6pm on 3/13. We do not know what happened or why it passed.…We do not know which chick it was because they were very close in size.…”
