  1. Accidental discovery: The Mouse that Roared (1959). Director #JackArnold. With #PeterSellers and #JeanSeberg.

An entertaining and quietly meaningful low-budget film, made before Peter Sellers became a major star.

The Duchy of Grand Fenwick is a tiny European mountain state, run by a bunch of aristocratic incompetents whose incompetence does no one any harm. They decide to venture a pretend invasion of the USA, which by mistake succeeds. A next-generation "Q-bomb" drives much of the plot, slighlty tasteless or insincere perhaps, but the film's tastelessness is honest and cheerful rather than creepy.

Sellers plays three characters: the Duchess, the Duchy's scheming Prime Minister, and a naive game warden who is meant to be used as a pawn but who prevails over his masters.

A charming film. All the anarchic elements of an Ealing comedy; cheaply made; silly; authentic. As an antidote to today's cinematic routine merchandise, it feels intensely current.

    - Hi, I’m Wloulaoup and since I have Newt Invest manage my finances I run my own jungle, my own lagoon and my own caipidingsda. Be aquatic! Let Newf Invest do your…
    - Cut! Did he say “Newf“? He can babble any bullshit he likes but he has to pronounce the company’s name right. They won’t buy it…
    - AIIIAAIIAAAAAA….!
    - He, what’s that?
    - That’s Tarzan. He’s rehearsing for the cough drop commercial.
    - Good heavens!
    - Another one, then?
    - Yes. But shut the doors and tell Mr. Aquatic about the pronounciation first.
    - But he bites if someone criticises him.
    - Send an intern then. Promise some casting shots.
    - I’ll try to find one...

    Five interns later.

    - Hi, I’m Wloulaoup and since I… since have Newt Invest manage my lagoon... I run my own… oh, can I have another one of these…
    - CUUUUUUUT!

  5. #Bales2023FilmChallenge March 5: Someone named Scott for #NationalScottDay

Despite its sensationalist pulpy title and #ColdWar premise, Jack Arnold's adaptation of the #RichardMatheson novel is an existentialist treatise.

The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) plays with the understanding of what it means to be acknowledged as a human, and one's place in the world. The story is told through the eyes of the titular Shrinking Man – Scott Carey – who after being exposed to strange fog, finds himself increasingly lost in this world.

It's phenomenal and I can only recommend it.
