it bears mentioning that paul chambers went to my high school

tommy flanagan is also from detroit, but he didn't go to cass tech, he graduated from northern (as did my father before him)

Another late-period gem from Pablo (like you couldn’t tell, given the Pablo-esque cover), with Basie and crew backing up Turner in fine form. Blues front to back.

Band includes Zoot Sims & Eddie Davis (tenor), JJ Johnson (trombone), Harry Edison (trumpet), Ray Brown (bass), Irving Ashby (guitar), and Louie Bellson (drums).

They're joined by Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers or Tommy Williams (bass), and Art Taylor or Roy Haynes (drums).

Classically RvG sounding, and very enjoyable.

Another little gem from Dad's collection - and something I haven't encountered before: what looks to be a quintet led by...two trombonists. Anyway, this mono 1955 Bethelem "East Coast Jazz" release bops right through a set of standards in fine style.

Always interesting to see how the labels would try to come up with striking images to grab your attention in the racks, too.
