Imagining Deku as Number One Hero via Fanfiction
The concept of ‘Number One Hero’ seems to instinctively conjure images of fame, glory, and lavish lifestyle—I imagined more pressure, responsibility, and imposter syndrome.
Ages ago, when the My Hero Academia series was in its Villains arc, I was under the impression that the plot was definitely not going in the direction of making Deku into the next All Might. I started writing this IzuOcha fanfic about that time, and I wanted to imagined what an alternate universe would be like where that did happen. What I did not expect was to be incredibly disappointed by the actual cannon ending. The story I was promised “this is how I became the world’s greatest hero” told me it would show Deku becoming the full-fledged hero he was supposed to be, and for me, the manga ending broke the core promise and muddied central themes. Deku taking on a passive role, watching from a distance as his friends became proper heroes, not acting until other people did something for him — this is not heroic at all, and created a character regression. (A few relatively small edits can fix it, so maybe the anime will chose to do so.)
Therefore, this fanfic has expanded its purpose and is now also about imagining Deku becoming the person he is meant to be.
Though the basic plot of this story is a Deku x Ochaco Rom Com, leaning into silly and cute, I think a simple plot works as excellent scaffolding to branch out from and explore different ideas. The ideas around Deku being Number One Hero (and the good and bad of this position) are given in pieces rather than put front-and-center early on in the story, but I hope to develop the idea fully by the end.
Anyways, Go Catch A Goose, Chapter 15 is a short flashback with bits of those themes, and you can read it HERE now.
Go Catch A Goose – Two years after U.A. graduation, Deku and Ochaco’s relationship is in the in between zone—are they friends, or is there something else? That is, until Deku falls for a vicious prank text, and a rom com ensues. Find All Chapters Here
