I had two separate regular use appliances break down today: my clothes washer and my mower.

I keep hearing variants of "the era of fix it yourself is over - just buy a new one or invoke the warranty".

And the fear of missing out I see around "#vibecoding" feels the same.

Why understand the machine, if the machine seems to understand itself now, with an AI service at a moderate monthly cost?

Well, I do use a AI to code soemtimes, and I use warranty service sometimes, and sometimes I just replace things.

But other times I roll up my sleeves, read the manual, and fix the dang thing myself.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned.

But my lawn is mown right now, and my clothes are running in the washer, and I'm not waiting for a replacement or for a specialist to arrive.

My code all works securely too, incidentally.
