Radxa Rock 5 itx — Изучаем недорогую ITX плату с ARM чипом

Я давно мечтал о домашнем ARM-сервере. Не о маленькой платке вроде Raspberry Pi, которая хороша для экспериментов, но всегда кажется компромиссом, а о чем-то настоящем — полноценной материнской плате в формате ITX, где есть всё необходимое для сборки рабочего сервера в обычном ATX кейсе, например питание от обычного ATX блока, порты для вентиляторов, или m.2 для ссд дисков. И вот в моих руках Radxa Rock 5 ITX. У нее имеется мощный ARM-процессор на 8 ядер, от 4 до 32 гигабайт оперативной памяти, стандартный форм-фактор Mini-ITX, и очень широкий выбор интерфейсов ввода и вывода. This thing will be an Intel Atom based fileserver with a near zero noise from it (I hope).

Motherboard: some Intel Atom motherboard with ITX formfactor and with 4 SATA interfaces, and gigabit Ethernet controller. PSU: some Chinese PSU which should emit 259W of power — enough for motherboard and 4 HDDs (I hope) :drgn_angel_pleading:

@xavier_hm So for "worth it" you have to check how much would it cost to get a proper mini #ATX or #ITX server against the cost of these old laptops. If a old ATX/ITX server cannot be obtained then these laptops are a steal and "worth it". These laptops will have mobile CPUs and not server CPUs. Again balance the cost of acquisition, that is crucial.

Yes, going headless would free up resources but you would need to be comfy with terminal.

Finally please harden SSH and the server.

In the middle of process of cleaning rust from my new old case for another Intel Atom based home server. WD-40 and sandpaper do their job :drgn_wrench:

This case was cheap enough for second hand thing from some wet office (or warehouse) but requires some work. At least it didn't cost for 100500 roubles like some "gaming" cases or "skeleton cases" (basically just a T-shaped open panel with a bed for motherboard. EMI? Lol, it is "legacy" and "outdated"/s :drgn_sigh: )

I was looking at #3dprint #itx case and found this nice looking project from 2018:

The name looked a bit familiar, so I checked the project page: https://github.com/eclecticc/ParametricCase

And indeed - it's from the Framework founder

So far the temps and the sounds have been much lower that the #ITX set up. #mATX seems to be the sweet spot between function and size.

All the parts assembled well and #Nobara Linux took care of the software/firmware.

Now the big question is: should I keep the PC on top of my desk or under the desk?

The #Framework Desktop PC really is something I'm interested in, but I wonder how the pricing will work.

At $1,099 doesn't seem too bad, buy even then it still has to battle with laptops with an RTX at that price point.

Again, the #RTX + Intel combo is readily available in terms of graphics and #AI power, so I don't see this flying off from shelves, but what do I know.

Right, that's done enough for now. The #FractalDesign Ridge is a phenomenal #ITX case with almost as much configurability as the Core V1 I just pulled this machine from, but with some major issues. My NH-L12S is on the CPU cooler compatibility list, but my motherboard puts it higher than expected, so it fouls the internal power cord; that's okay though because my PSU's socket is placed so it can't work with it either. My PC thus sits open upside down until I find a right-angled cable that fits.

I have been designing a tiny but still easy to print #itx case specifically for the Gigabyte RTX4060 LP and the new HDPlex 250W GaN PSU. Only two pieces, fits onto the bed of a Prusa MK3.

The PC upgrade begins. First ITX build and set up a rough layout to get lengths for custom PSU cables. MB and PSU are partially screwed in, but the GPU is just a cooler since it’s sitting in my custom loop PC tower right now.

Never built an ITX system before, so this is fun. Doublechecking every dimension of every component for compatibility is a fun exercise. Cables should come in a couple weeks and I'll update this thread then. #pcupgrade #pcgaming #itx
