About to drive 1.5 hrs one way because someone can’t hookup a printer to their WiFi. 😒

A client asked for a server install for a specific CRM developed by one of Italy's biggest software houses. They’re dropping Windows Server 2022 support in a few months, even though the OS itself has a much longer lifecycle.
We looked into Linux support: Rocky Linux 9 and Ubuntu 24.04 are "certified", but only until April 2027. Since we'd rather not reinstall everything in less than a year, we asked for a path that guarantees official support beyond 2027.
The "support" team replied with a canned response, attaching a 2023 document where every single distribution is listed as EoL since 2025. 🤡
And then people ask me why these "software giants" are the primary cause of my receding hairline...

Cleaning out a closet in my office, I’m pretty sure I just regained 15 sq ft of space in our house just from picking up and organizing the random cables scattered all over the floor. Everything is now sorted and labeled and it’s beautiful.

CW: Work day RANT.
Today was an absolute crap show. Rant/long post incoming...
Before I event get into the office, actually getting right out of my car, I get texted that a client's label maker (one's that they use with a third-party dealership software) isn't printing. Mind you, this client is in the town I work in and I work about 30 mins away.
I call them and evidentially it stopped working yesterday afternoon. Ugh, I could have went by before driving to work this morning. LOL. So I check and make sure that they are indeed connect to our network before calling the third-party and starting the dance with them.
Anyways, I end up having to head back to Amarillo and go to the clients location and start the process with the third-party.
Oh, and while I was heading to the client's, I get a text that another printer at the location isn't printing (which also connects to this system).
Then when I get to the location, another text comes in that printers at another one of their locations are having issues with their printers that are tied to this system. Now my IT sense are tingling and I'm pretty sure something is going on here with that third-party.
I finally get on the phone with them and they investigate. Come to find out, every single printer that connects to this third-party that allows the software to print has been removed. OMG! Removed for both of the locations!!! So now I have to get every printer's make, model, ip, mac, and information for department and who uses it for them so we can get them all set back up in this system. What a damn pain in the ass.
To make things even better, one of the accounting people, a printer they use (aside from this mess), isn't printing from her computer. 😭 At this point I am frustrated and that is not good in this industry. I get to investigating our network, etc. I can see this printers MAC on the switch but it's not registering the static IP that we have set for it. I have tried multiple ports at the drop. Rebooted the switch. Now I go to switch it to dhcp so it can just grab a random ip just to do some testing. At this point I am able to see an IP via the switch but it is not our networks octet. WTH?!
Come to find out, for some reason, something is handing out different IPs that are not on our networks octet. Now I am running around trying to figure out what in this network could be going rogue and handing IPs out. The only thing I can think of it the damn Cicso Meraki from this third-party for the printer connections. So I call them back and talk to them. Somehow in this mess, this meraki isn't in theri system for this location and client. They can't find it. Son of a ... You have got to be kidding me!! SO what probably has happened is, it's probably reset to default setting and is now handing out IPs to anything it can.
So yeah, my day was an absolute crap show. Just another printer nightmare day every IT person dreads.
And before @cliffwade says anything about printers, because I know he will, DON'T DO IT!

Nachdem ich mich nun echt lange über die Velux-Sache aufgeregt habe … glaubt ihr mir nie … Es läuft einfach wieder. Hat noch gezwickt nachdem ich alles neu gestartet habe. Und urplötzlich läuft es. Seit Tagen sogar stabil. Also ich glaube manchmal ist die IT doch irgendwie ein bisschen verhext 😂 #ITProblems #SmartHome #Technologie #Velux

🎉 Congrats! You've reached a level of IT prowess where dropping the production database is just Friday night entertainment. 😂 With #Cloudflare blocking your attempts at self-sabotage, it's a wonder you haven't been promoted to Chief Chaos Officer yet. 🍕🔒

I love finding broken code after an update. Suddenly it's a fatal exception and probably used to be just a warning but the function needed an array and instead someone put "'sadasd'" which truly feels like a keyboard-slap-place-holder value that has sat there for years at this point. The value is replaced later in code but it's also not required so the fix today is literally just delete the code...

Recent client issue...
Client: I have no sound
Me: Okay, are your speakers plugged in?
Client: Yes
Me: Where?
Client: In the front of computer.
Me: In headphone jack?
Clients: Yes, that's where they've always been.
Me: Hmm, okay. Well can you try and plug them into the back of computer in the green jack?
Client: Okay
Me: ....waiting
Client: Okay, still nothing coming out.
Me: Weird. settings is still saying nothing is plugged in.'Tried some other things and he gave me some more information about some other stuff.'
Me: Okay I will head there to check some stuff out.
...
I get there and immediately look at the back of the computer...
The damn speakers are plugged into the BLUE jack NOT the GREEN jack.
I plug them into the green jack and sound immediately starts to come from the speakers!
Client: Oh, WOW. I though that was green. Looks green to me.
Me: screaming silently -

Just now heading to the office after the two client visits this morning.
Then when I get there, I have to call another client for a…you guessed it, printer issue.

I can't tell if I'm too smart or too dumb for this current Parallels issue.
Can't sign into Apple ID unless your host and guest both have macOS 15.3 beta or higher (15.3 beta fixed the Apple ID issue).
However, there are no ISOs for betas anymore. You have to download the updater by ... signing in with your Apple ID.
So they tell you to update both your host (done ✔️) and guest (how?!?) to 15.3 beta.
Is this some kind of joke or is there some other solution that just never gets mentioned?

Oh dear. They want me to be involved in an AI project which seems to involve training a model with about 20 years of hard drives data, backup tapes of project data, excel sheets, word docs, pdfs, photos, SQL dumps of Sharepoint & timesheet application data & staff CVs. With the intent of giving AI the proposal for a new project, work out the time, cost and staff required to complete it & supply the staff with background knowledge of similar completed projects. Sounds easy, I'm just about to ask ChatGPT. #ITProblems

Challenge from the Internal Sustainability Auditor (a bolt on role of a Marketing person it seems). They've identified that some of our very basic web sites need to be more sustainable but won't address the elephant in the room of the marketing department themselves outsourcing to AI email marketing, collaboration & project management cloud services. Even though these are clearly running from the same Google/MS/AWS infrastructure and we rent them in the same way as our web hosting, they're not our responsibility in the same way as those other cloud services apparently so aren't in the audit calculation for some reason? #ITProblems

Q: If you spin up a base install of #WordPress at somewhere like DigitalOcean, BlueHost, SiteGround, GoDaddy, Hostinger etc is it worth doing your own #pentest from Kali Linux. Fairly sure last time I tried I got myself IP blocked but I'm being told to do it anyway but fairly sure these hosts already routinely do this for us. They're not bare bones servers here. #ITProblems

Why do marketing try to make you feel bad for saying the SEO bod they found from a web search can't have admin to install their own code directly on prod? This SEO person has simply insisted they must have access and has become challenging to deal with!!! Oh dear! Is someone pen testing me via social engineering? #ITProblems #SEO

Does your #WebDesign agency say they are ordering you a wildcard SSL cert, charge you for what that would usually cost, but when you look closely it's only a WPEngine.com hosted Let's Encrypt? #ITProblems #WebHosting #TricksOfTheTrade

Now that I have them back up. I can now go back to the damn 111-page compliance report she sent me and relook over the fail list. Hopefully I can find support document from tp-link.
So, how was everyone else’s day?

I'm sorry, I can't offer your client 100% server & site uptime SLA with one server admin who only does office hours and you want your marketing people to insert their own code widget plugins (to insert their own tracking code to bypass the prior consent policy). #ITProblems

Of course, the marketing department, who like to routinely send reports about GDPR but also complain too many people opt-out of their analytics/tracking, think this is something our IT should fix and want confirmation that this doesn't affect all our own web sites. #ITProblems

Just found an IT company (one-man-band) charging for a client's web hosting account with 5 old instances spanning 12 years of a web site, none of those are actually live, the current site is even hosted elsewhere. I assume they "wait for instruction to close the account" & just to scrape off their own 20% mark up on hosting costs every year. The client has been reluctant to close these idle sites through fear of breaking things. How many companies waste like this? #ITProblems

Marketing manger just said "let's go for the 300k visitors option, we need this to reach as many businesses as possible, that free WordPress thing doesn't even mention how many visitors they will get for us." - Yes, they think the CMS provider somehow offers you this many visitors, not the promise to serve up to this many visitors. #ITProblems

Goodness! They had all the signs at the exhibition centre printed & everything, took weeks, but no manager, graphic designer or proofer thought to check the domain name they were printing was actually live or in this case even existed!
The first visitor to the stand noticed the QR code & URL went nowhere!
Frantic calls later, fortunately for them, the domain was still available for purchase & got a redirect to the proper site by the time the next visitor tried.

Sometimes, all you can do is make sure you have it written down so the inaction on the security issues you describe to your management were foreseeable and can't be misconstrued as your fault.
However, said management can fire you for an arbitrary reason then tell everyone it was your fault when you're no longer there to prove otherwise or defend yourself.
