Rabbi Abraham Zerviv, a 54‑year‑old rabbinical judge in Tel Aviv who also serves as a reserve D9 operator, was chosen to light a torch at Israel’s 78th Independence Day ceremony. He has been involved in demolition operations in Gaza, posted videos of those activities, and made controversial remarks such as saying he considered publishing a picture of a Palestinian “because Hamas will finish him.”

The Education Minister praised him as a symbol of deep commitment to the #Jewish people, #Torah and the land, citing his lifelong work to strengthen Torah study and settlement. However, the Judicial Complaints Authority warned that his public calls for settlement in #Gaza and related statements breach the ethical code for judges, since they involve politically contested positions and blur the separation between his judicial duties and military service.
