I'm not a supporter of Palestine Action, but I'm sure that arresting those who are for holding signs showing their support does nothing to cool overheated rhetoric about the Israel--Palestine dispute, wastes the already stretched resources of the police, and makes no contribution whatsoever to the safety of anybody in the UK. It's also a straightforward example of a government wrongfully restricting freedom of expression.

To those readers who think this post is inconsistent with the thinking behind the post I made earlier deploring the Northern Ireland Parades Commission's decision allowing the Orange Order to march along Garvaghy Road, I would point out that the cases are quite different.

The Orange Order marching along the Garvaghy Road is an attempt to signal the dominance of one community over another. I believe that political consideration, let alone the prospect of a breakdown of public order, should have been permissible grounds for the Parades Commission to reroute the march. Marches, demonstrations, or assemblies likely to intimidate, harass, or stir up communal violence should be regulated or prohibited.*

For just those reasons I think it right that some "pro-Palestinian" marches in London have been restricted or rerouted. These considerations do not apply to the Palestine Action protesters outside the Labour Party conference, so they should not be arrested, regardless of what one thinks of Palestine Action.

*Please don't start telling me that this "violates the First Amendment" or referring me to the ACLU and the Skokie case. Quite aside from the obvious fact of the US Constitution not being part of UK law, neither the First Amendment nor the reasoning of the ACLU in 1977 should be treated as scripture applicable to all in all places at all times.

Algae damage the membranes in desalination plants. Israel even went so far as to spray pesticides into the sea to try to reduce the algae.

That algal bloom is likely caused by the israel army having destroyed all the sewage treatment plants in Gaza, causing raw sewage to go into the sea.
