  2. For today’s #StandingStoneSunday here’s yours truly at the Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland from last October. An amazing stone circle that was set up between 2900 and 2600BC. One version of folklore has it they are petrified giants who refused to convert to Christianity. #neolithic #isleoflewis #scotland #outerhebrides

  3. Golden Eagle

From a magical morning on the Isle Of Lewis, when we saw a juvenile white-tailed eagle perched near the road, then this golden eagle flew really close by, and then a female merlin zipped past us carrying prey.

  4. In the summer of 1976 I went north to the Isle of Lewis. I saw some superb photos in a pharmacy window that were not for sale. I told my mother-in-law, who I was staying with, about them. She proceeded to 'persuade' the pharmacist, the photographer A.M. MacDonald ARPS, to part with them. They are the most precious things I brought home, though I still feel sorry for MacDonald. They are now with Am Baile, the repository for the crofting counties of Scotland.

  5. Calling all those who signed up for the April 2025 Yan Tan Tourer Yarn Club - it's time for the big reveal!

Introducing 'Crystal Seas', a 100g hand dyed skein of 100% British Bluefaced Leicester Aran yarn based on the image of the same name by @shutterspot

Yarn parcels are already on their way. Happy knitting!

  6. Disconnected, but never out of reach. Even in the remote beauty of the Isle of Lewis, a classic red phone box stands tall, calling back to simpler days. 📞🏴

  7. A #FridayFold from the west coast of the #IsleofLewis.

The dark mafic #OuterHebrides dykes were intruded into the #Lewisian gneiss. The original cross cutting relationship has been brought into near concordance during subsequent #Laxfordian deformation which also generated these folds.

  8. Tiger stipe camouflage isn't really effective on the west coast of the #IsleofLewis👀
Compositional (rhythmic?) banding is preserved locally within an occurrence of #Lewisian "Older Basic Suite" meta-basics/ultrabasics.

  9. Looks like another fine Hebridean morning🌄. Looking east across Broad Bay to Point.
A week ago we were exploring the mainland mountains silhouetted on the horizon😍

  10. Attenuation of the limbs in these folds has left some of the fold hinges essentially floating.

  11. @Nick

    Thanks for sharing Nick.
I cycled the Hebridean way in 1988 and came across Callanish standing stones almost by accident. My first big trip from Australia. I wanted to get away from southern England and Wales so took a train to Oban, Fronted up at the Oban Ferry terminal in the morning and decided to catch the ferry to Barra and island hop with my bicycle. Stumbled on Callanish.on Lewis. It was a great week of cycling. Memorable. The midges were pretty fearsome, though. 3 pics from that trip.

  12. #Salmon is still migrating on the #IsleofLewis, we were not looking into ferry traffic, that's the reason! A true #lowcarbon food indeed, as long as you don't look too much into it. So much for #sushis... these may take a plane "alive" to reach a distant country. Most likely through Heathrow airport after a full day on a truck. They will be "processed" on the mainland if they are lucky.

  13. Had a great day at the Calanais standing stones. The cross and circles as a whole are interesting, but the individual stones are fascinating to look at with so many patterns in the Lewissian Gneiss rock that makes them up. Fascinating to think of how they were erected and their status as art - people choosing certain stones for their appearance then consciously displaying them, saying "look at this, it's important". #StoneCircle #stones #calanais #Scotland #IsleOfLewis #callanish

  14. 'Stac a' Phris Sea Arch'
    .
Stac a' Phris is a sea arch on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, UK. Majestically overlooking the turbulent North Atlantic, at sunset golden light illuminates this remarkable rock formation.

  15. Has anybody seen this rock type in the #Lewisian of NW Scotland?

These examples are in the Ness Assemblage on the west coast of the #isleoflewis

  16. Ultrabasic boudins and 'pods' frequently occur in #Lewisian gneisses on the #IsleofLewis.
These examples are on the beach at Port Nis (Port of Ness), near the northern end of the island.

  17. Another hard day in the office😎 looking for a #FridayFold

The #Lewisian gneisses on the beach at Port Nis (Port of Ness) have been folded during the #Laxfordian.

  18. #Torridonian on Tuesday.

Glacial erratic on the north-west coast of the #IsleofLewis.
After a couple of hours trying to figure out what was going on in the grey #Lewisian mylonites🤓 I was ready for a distraction.

  19. Great day out yesterday with
    @frankrennie
visiting west and central #IsleofLewis with a distinctively igneous theme.
    #Laxfordian granite at Dalbeg.

  20. @goossenwhisky @goossenwhisky have you been to Abhainn Dearg Distillery, Isle of Lewis?
Really taking distilling back to its roots with single cask bottlings. I’ve a delicious bottle aged 10 years in an Olorosa cask waiting for the right occasion.
Very much a steadings scale distillery.
