I miss OS/2.
My first #Windows was #Win7 because I needed it for a required college course.
When I got my first PC, it was a Zenith running their version of #DOS.
I got a new computer and upgraded to #DRDOS (from #DigitalResearch) and #DesqView, which gave me #multitasking. I ran a #FidoNet #BBS for a few years.
When I got #internet, it was 128k #ISDN because I headed up support for the dialup #ISP I co-owned with a couple other guys. And I shut down the BBS. Somewhere in there, I'd upgraded to OS/2.
And, when #IBM gave up, I put #Debian on my desktop because we used it on the #servers at work.
When #DSL and #cable lured our 24/7 business customers away, we couldn't pivot to consumer internet before we had to close up.
So, I went to school for my associate's degree. And needed to take a #database course, which required #MSAccess, and so my PC was dual boot.
Until #Win10 was forced on me, and I removed the infestation.
I was getting tired of being a proactive #admin, and a friend suggested #LinuxMint.
That's my personal box now, and my school box has #Win11, but it's not actually my box — it belongs to the state.

Last #repaircafe #repair: local #ISDN phone exchange with audio issues from approx. 2004. Three electrolytic caps were definetely bad with internal resistance of at least 20 Ohms. They were right next to voltage regulators that idle at 50°C. No way to test it, but voltages are stabile again and the ripple voltage is now at <1% so I hope that was a successfull fix.
9 Watt idle for 22 Years, thats nearly 2 MWh!

So langsam scheint auch die Unterstützung für mein #ISDN Telefon aus den Routern zu verschwinden. So sad. Und auch das Fax empfangsfähig anzuschließen wird immer mehr zum Abenteuer, weil die Audiocodecs vom Voip sich so schlecht mit dem Faxcodec vertragen.
Für ein paar Cent billiger haben wir ohne Not den besten Telefonstandard, den wir je hatten, in die Tonne gekloppt.Ich glaube nicht mehr an "technischen Fortschritt". Ich glaube nur noch an Gewinnoptimierung allerorten.

Ich hab schon wieder eine Glasfaser-Challenge: Ein VDF-Kabelanschluss wird durch DTAG-FTTH ersetzt, und die Fritzbox Cable durch ein Glasfaser-Modem und ein Speedport-Ding.
Ich war über Jahre mit Fritz sehr zufrieden und denke jetzt schon darüber nach, Speedport (oder beides) durch nen neuen Fritz zu ersetzen, u.a. weil ich im Haus noch eine ISDN-Anlage habe.
Ich weiß nur nicht: Welche Fritzbox (mit Glasfaser oder ohne) nehm ich denn dafür? -
The #ISDN stack got removed from the #Linux kernel a few days ago. That's quite the blast from the past. It's been in the kernel since, erm… *checks*… before #git and it's what the first ever #software product I built *and* sold was based on, a "unified messaging" server for #email, #fax and #voicemail. It was basically just some #python glue code duct-taping different systems together. But it worked and was used for far too many years by some.

Just spent half day reconfiguring #SIP trunks on #FreePBX and #Asterisk (using chan_pjsip) as one of our providers silently yoinked #IAX2 support - #VOIP is as cursed if not more so than #PSTN / #ISDN circuits, except you don't have to crawl around as much in corners and roofspaces amongst spiders, mouse-like rodents and possibly snakes (if you have them in your country), and there's less chance of ending up on the wrong side of 100-120 volts (either AC or DC, depending on whether its ringing voltage or the strong DC voltage that British Telecom and others used to send down certain ISDN lines in 90s/00s)

When irc.microsoft.com was live & had crazy stuff on it that would shock you.
When a voodoo 3dfx was the card to have.
Yes it was not all fun as most people were on modems aka slow internet & only a lucky few had ISDN lines(I was lucky) or DSL.
