  1. Okay... it's half-alive... It doesn't pick up on my network's DNS recursor.

    So it can't find no one to talk to :(

    It's 2:33... and I'm off to bed. I'm still in a good place for the setup.

  2. It’s alive!

    This Raspberry Pi has no SD or NVMe drive. It completely runs off a network disk on iSCSI.

    Now, just put it back in its place with no screen attached.

  4. 🎉 In the latest episode of "Things No One Asked For", our hero bravely attempts to boot #Linux #diskless using #ZFS, #iSCSI, and #PXE just to avoid messing with Windows. Because clearly, the only logical solution to not wanting to clutter your #gaming PC with toolchains is to summon the unholy trinity of ancient network boot protocols. 🥳 Honestly, why not just run Doom on your fridge while you're at it? 😂

Astra Linux

  6. I finally solved my zfs-on-iSCSI systemd quandry:

    # cat /etc/systemd/system/zfs-iscsi-import.service
    [Unit]
    Description=Trigger ZFS import after iSCSI availability
    After=cloud-init.target
    Wants=cloud-init.target

    [Service]
    Type=oneshot
    ExecStartPre=/sbin/modprobe zfs
    ExecStart=/bin/systemctl start zfs-import.target
    RemainAfterExit=yes

    [Install]
    WantedBy=default.target

  7. For the longest time #Backblaze hasn't supported the backup of networked drives, but has supported #iSCSI. Sadly, and annoyingly quietly, v9.2.2.878 of the client killed iSCSI support, so my array is now blocked.

    I'd have liked some notice, but okay. The new setup (local drives, iSCSI as local backup) is now working with much better small file handling, and thankfully the data deduplication worked perfectly, so no re-upload required.

  8. Hey fedi, is LUKS over iSCSI over the web a good idea?

    Usecase would be personal storage for mostly media.
    Exclusive mount is not really an issue, but still feels kinda meh.

    My main concern is: does this work good enough in practice over not super-reliable links?
    secondary: does it perform well enough?

    Are there other setups with data encrypted on client that do not statically leak a ton of metadata like file structure?

  9. Beelink ME mini NAS

    blog.hardill.me.uk/2025/06/25/

    I’ve been lightly thinking about a new NAS for a little while now, trying to decide what to replace my over 10 years old Synology DS214play.

    The DS214play has the original 2x2TB set up in mirrored configuration to provide basic failure redundancy. While the drives are currently not full since I stopped running MythTV and storing all the recording, 10 years is a little bit too far past the MTTF […]

  10. Multipathing: it makes fixing cabling issues so much easier. Swapped out the 2x2m fiber patches to the NAS with 2x5m ones because the old ones were just a smidge strained. Had absolutely no issues swapping them out one by one and no downtime.

  16. NVME over TCP

    blog.hardill.me.uk/2025/03/14/

    I’ve played things like iSCSI before as a way to network boot a Raspberry Pi and have Docker work nicely and also as a Volume Provider for Kubernetes for things like Minio.

    It’s a way to share block level devices over a network to different devices.

    While SCSI has under pinned a lot of storage for a very long time, more recently a new player has entered the scene, specifically for accessing […]

  18. NVMe over TCP vs iSCSI: Evolution of Network Storage

    TLDR: In a direct comparison of NVMe over TCP vs iSCSI, we see that NVMe over TCP outranks iSCSI in all categories with IOPS improvements of up to 50% (and more) and latency improvements by up to 34%. When data grows, storage needs to grow, too. That’s when remotely attached SAN (Storage Area Network) systems come in. So far, these were commonly connected through one of three protocols: Fibre Channel, Infiniband, or iSCSI. However, with the latter being on the “low end” side of […]

  19. Bon, ça me rend fou.

    root@proxmox:/mnt/pve# umount /mnt/pve/ISCSI-5400
    umount: /mnt/pve/ISCSI-5400: target is busy.
    root@proxmox:/mnt/pve# mount -o remount,rw /mnt/pve/ISCSI-5400
    mount: /mnt/pve/ISCSI-5400: cannot remount /dev/sdh1 read-write, is write-protected.
           dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.

    MAIS COMMENT JE FAIS POUR LE REMONTER FFS SANS AVOIR A REBOOT ?
