" Last week Irvine Welsh unveiled a new Trainspotting novel, as well as a title and a publication date. It’s to be called Men In Love and will land in bookshops on July 3, 2025.

The news is welcome but hardly a surprise. Renton, Spud, Sick Boy and Begbie already populate a handful of novels which function either as sequels, prequels or side stories. It seems Mr Welsh finds it hard to stay away from them. Men In Love catches up with the crew as the rave scene is in full swing during the dying days of Thatcher’s Britain in the late 1980s.

What has raised a few eyebrows is the news that Mr Welsh will simultaneously release a disco album of the same name, in the company of musical helpmates The Sci-Fi Soul Orchestra.

    (. . .)

So yes, we did talk disco. “I love it. I always have. It was a great movement and all that ‘Disco Sucks’ stuff was really fascist. It was gay culture and black culture – it was a big, mad, fun, sexy thing.

“It was a guilty pleasure for me because I was a punk and back then punk and disco were the most antagonistic things. I used to get togged up in my disco gear and sneak out. It was easier to do in London. I could never do that back here because somebody would see you in your John Travolta white suit.”

    The mind boggles."
