  1. #SeriousSolarpunk - that's my proposed sociotechnical method to design and implement a sustainable internet, grid and place together.

    It was a response to #IRTF SUSTAIN RG asking me to give a keynote. (Thanks, guys!)

    When you start by collaborating with a place, and build ingenious infrastructure with them, reflecting on governance and ownership, you can design for longevity, liveability for place and infrastructure combined.

  2. 📄 I have published my summary of the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) activities at #IETF126 in Vienna.

    The report covers the Applied Networking Research Workshop (ANRW), the IRTF Open Meeting, and all 14 Research Groups—from AI networking and Internet architecture to routing, transport, privacy, sustainability, quantum networking, and more.

    One aspect that makes the IRTF particularly valuable is its research model. Rather than organizing around individual publications, the IRTF is organized around long-lived research communities where researchers, engineers, implementers, operators, and standards experts collaboratively explore fundamental Internet challenges over many years.

    At a time when AI is transforming how research is written, reviewed, and disseminated, sustained technical dialogue and open collaboration are becoming increasingly important.

  3. Mind blowing numbers about Finnish datacentre build out from an IRTF Sustainability and the internet workshop

    As I mentioned before, I was at an IRTF (Internet Research Task Force) workshop last week in Passau. It was my first time, and my mind is still buzzing from all the things I learned. This is one thing want to be able to come back to a presentation from Jukka Manner, a professor at Aalto University. I’m uploading it here with a few notes, because WOW.

    You can follow the link to download the PDF of the deck, but here are the ones to look at:

    • slide 9 – Google as half of finished data center capacity in Finland, all by itself.
    • slide 12 – The planned expansion, before 2030 is about 7.7 GW. The entire Finnish grid is only 10 gigawatts in capacity. This also expansion is also 27x increase between now and 2030 . That is the biggest change I’ve seen so far in any country.
    • slide 16 – Basically all of the demand growth would have to go to data centers for this build out to be possible.
    • slide 17 – how the hyperscalers responded when they were asked to be flexible to help share grid capacity

    I think pulling out slide 17 is worth while, because it’s both eye-opening, but also worth discussing.

    You can see the quote that Jukka mentioned when in a workshop with someone from a hyperscaler about integrating datacentres into the grid in Finland:

    Q: ”Can you drop your consumption if the national power grid has challenges delivering enough electricity ?
    A: “We don’t have the incentive to do that”

    Ouch.

    To be fair, pretty much all to mind flexibility involves someone being paid for the flexibility, either in the form of compensation for changing your demand, or in the form of being allowed on the grid to make money, and this being the price of getting onto the grid now.

    But this presentation is going to stick in my mind for a while, because before I saw this I had some idea of the changes taking place in Finland, and the deck points to loads of interesting ideas beyond thse figures, like there being an actual open data portal with the location and date of every planned project in Finland, being a thing that is out there, and the sky not falling.

    It’s mind-blowing that this is not something that we have across Europe, because this is precisely the info the industry is fighting hard to have not disclosed in laws that would otherwise require it.

  10. Getting ready for the #IETF LAKE hackathon combined with the #IRTF T2TRG meeting at INRIA Paris <parishackathon.lakewg.org/> on the next two days.
    We will interop #EDHOC implementations (eg. using @RIOT_OS and its #RustLang companion RIOT-rs), test it directly on #CoAP, and discuss current engineering and research questions on how #IoT devices can communicate in a secure and privacy preserving manner while fitting on the tiniest of devices.

The Internet is an important tool to reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and to globally support human rights. Consequently, the lack of meaningful access to digital infrastructure and services is also a form of disenfranchisement.

    Solely having Internet access is not enough. At the same time as we work to connect the next billion people and reduce the digital divide, it is also important to understand persistent and novel inequalities in the digital age when accessing content and services. There are more and more barriers to meaningful access to the services and applications that run on the Internet. Even if Internet connectivity is available, information and services access may remain challenged and unequal.

    This workshop aims to collect reports about barriers to access content and services on the Internet, e.g based on filtering, blocking as well as due to general inequality of technological capabilities, like device or protocol limitations. The workshop aims to help the Internet community get a better understanding of how the Internet functions in different parts of the world and which technology or techniques need to be used to gain access to content. Further this workshop aims to build an understanding of what “being connected” to the Internet means: What is the Internet to users? What is needed to be meaningfully connected? What are the minimum requirements in order to be able to access certain parts of the content and services provided over the Internet?"
