  1. What did you love when you were younger but fear as you get older? was a question on r/AskReddit today and my answer was:

    Heights.

As a younger man I clambered about buildings, ruins, mountains and so on without a qualm but in the latter part of my 40s vertigo began to take hold and it has grown worse

  2. If #oil price is set months before it goes on the #market, why everytime there is a #war the price change immediately?

The logic wants that you will pay that price months later, not now.

Market is #rationale or #irrational at its convenience.

  3. @TheresaReason @maverick604 @NMBA I keep seeing these "Carney is weak" comments about a man who had stood up to more world issues than most leaders when what they mean is "I wish Carney always agreed with me."
    Stop it. It's a fallacy.

  8. A Bike Ride and Noise Pollution

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

Yesterday afternoon I heard some very loud banging. I thought that it was due to an idiot driving a farming machine into something solid and they were trying to fix the damage. As it continued it made me furious. It's for this reason that I decided to spend the rest of the afternoon on my bike.

When I rode by the absurd people making a huge amount of noise I saw that they were hammering at the bed of their flat bed truck. For some reason they were hitting it as hard as they could with hammers.

    Hammering Induhviduals (intentional spelling)

The people at this barn are not mentally astute. They are very good at making huge amounts of noise, for hours at a time, without any consideration for the environment. In a village such behaviour is often the only source of noise pollution. That's why I think little of them. Making noise is demonstrating apathy. Being quiet and considerate is empathetic.

    Tyre Noises and Car Noises

Recently it was wet and rainy for days in a row. Before a walk I noticed the noise pollution from the motorway. When I went for a walk I noticed that the only sound I could hear was from car tyres, various motorvehicles and motorbikes. I couldn't hear birds, or children playing, or people conversing, or any other noise. The only noise came from cars and their tyres.

It is during the pandemic, when there was no sound of cars, for weeks, or even months, that I realised that the background noise we are all used to hearing isn't the sound of nature. It's noise pollution from cars, that have become so integral to our lives that we no longer heard them, until lockdowns reduced traffic.

    The Bicycle Ride

Due to the unbearable noise pollution made by the absurd behaviour of the two induhviduals it made sense to flee for a while. The weater was good. It was sunny and warm. Not to ride would have been a wasted opportunity.

Originally I thought that I should treat it as a rest day. I cycled up towards the Jura, before turning and heading into the vineyards between Luins and Rolle. Every so often I stopped and I took photos, and appreciated the view, before continuing.

Autumn colours are out, and I saw other people out on photo walks. The advantage of being on a photo bike ride is that you're moving faster from vantage point to vantage point and you don't need to worry about parking and walking back to your car. I suspect that cars I saw parked by some of the toblerones belong to people out on walks.

    The Default

Most people would think, "I want to do A, I'll take the car". In so doing they increase the need for roads, for parking spaces, and noise pollution from car engines, and car tyres. By taking the bike I can take the same roads as car but take a fraction of the space, and if I want to stop and take a photo I can, as conveniently as if I was walking or hiking, but with the flexibility of covering a bigger distance.

The drawback of course, is that you need a certain level of fitness for the freedom of a bike to be really beneficial. It's when you cycle with "normal" people that you see how much of a struggle it is to ride as fast as others. That's when you notice the progress you've made.

    And Finally

Due to people deciding to clean a truck via the absurd medium of heavy hammer blows I was so disgusted by the absurdity of the noise pollution that I went for a healthy photo bike ride to escape the insanity and it worked. I was able to make it home at dusk a few minutes after the sun had set.

  10. On Strava Being Irrational

    Reading Time: 2 minutes

It is irrational and absurd for Strava to sue one of its' most important providers of data, Garmin. Every run, hike, climb and other sport that I have done for years comes from either Suunto, Garmin, Apple Watch or another brand. Garmin is huge in the cycling community.

I see people with Garmin devices, wahoo devices and more. People like me have a cycling computer, and a sports tracking wrist watch. With these devices we track our workouts. We automatically feed that data into Strava. Strava is the third party, not Garmin. Garmin is the source of the data that Strava is making money from. Without Garmin, Suunto and more, Strava would be a mediocre tracking app with little to track power and more.

Strava tracks heart rate and location. I haven't seen it promote being able to track more.

    The Strava Niche

Strava is competing with Meetup.com rather than Garmin, Suunto et al, because Strava has a strong community ecosystem. Today's ride options were via Strava for the Nyon rides and Meetup.com for the Geneva rides. I bring this up because if we look at Garmin offering features that are also available with Strava, then they are mutually beneficial.

People will buy a new head unit specifically because they want climb information, KOM information and more. People want the data that Strava provides, but as there is no Strava device, just a mobile phone app, they have no choice.

    Garmin Sharing

Imagine if Garmin blocked sharing with Strava. Imagine if Garmin decided to be like Apple with Garmin and Suunto, or if Suunto and Garmin decided to share their data. At this moment in time they don't.

If you want to share a Garmin workout with Suunto you need to export it from Garmin and then import it to Suunto, and vice versa. This takes time, which as a geek, I am not even ready to invest. Garmin can exist without Strava, but Strava is dependent on Suunto, Garmin, Apple and others sharing data. By suing Garmin Strava is undercutting itself.

    And Finally

Garmin, Suunto, Apple and other brands offer devices that help us track our activities, and compare how we did before with how we are doing now. Strava offers a community to share this progress with, as well as to organise activities with others, so that days out, being active are less solitary.

I get heatmaps for free with Suunto, and with a subscription via Sports Tracker. With the Garmin Instinct and Garmin Instinct 2 I track all walking and running sports. With the Garmin Explore 2 I get cycling information, including climb distance, gradient, and more to help with pacing.

With Strava suing Garmin I feel that both companies are wasting money that could be re-injected into making products better.
