As a young child, sometimes I casually scratched and sniffed the fascinatingly flaky heat sink of an old ironing board. Probably a board from the late 1950s or early 1960s.
An "asbestos content approaching 100%", according to <https://pdf.library.soton.ac.uk/BOPCRIS/19585/pdf/19585.pdf> (1983). Of course, I had been blissfully unaware of any possible risk during my early 1970s sniffing expeditions.
I doubt that my mum ever saw me sniffing, although thankfully she did notice things such as me playfully sticking metal knitting needles into 240-volt mains power outlets in the hallway. Yes, I was that type of child – "curious" might be a polite description. My poor mum.
Years later, probably still last century, I did some digging to discover whether I had put myself at risk.
The summary today (decades later) is the same as when I first dug. In a nutshell:
― negligible risk of asbestosis.
