  1. The Sea, The Sea

The 1978 novel by Irish author Iris Murdoch ... Winner of the Booker Prize. One ot the most thought provoking books I've read. "Self-deception, the power of memory, jealousy, + the conflict between imagination + reality,"

  3. "Ordinary Human Failings", longlisted for the 2024 #WomensPrize for Fiction, is the 2nd novel by #IrishWriter Megan Nolan after her much-lauded debut, "Acts of Desperation".
Read Nolan's psychological & tragic novel of an Irish family in 1990s London:

  4. Ah, the joys of being a self-employed writer. Every payment I've been due over the last few weeks has been delayed, and I've had to chase payment. In each case, I've been dealing with someone on a regular wage. Wonder how they'd feel if they had to constantly ask for their money.

  6. One of the nicest things about school sessions is when the kids create art ahead of your visit, so you walk into a school like St Mochta’s in Clonsilla to find this kind of thing.

  8. As as self-employed children's writer, it's possible that, for a *single hour's work*, I might have to:
    Provide a quote
Fill out a supplier set-up form
    Read and sign a contract
    Provide an invoice
Apply for Garda vetting (police background check)
    And chase for payment.

Just to get paid for that one hour.

  15. Finally had a chance to read Old Game Plus. Loved the mix of stories written by Seamus Kavanagh. My favourite is Weapon of Choice because of the twisty ending. The artists on this one are hugely talented. Well done all involved.

As I crawl in as far as I can to the eaves of the roof in our attic to do an emergency fix by scraping bonding agent onto the broken edges of a roof tile from underneath, trying not to breathe in particles of fibreglass wool, I reflect once more on the joy of living the glamorous life of an author.

  24. One of the toughest aspects of a professional artist’s career is coping with uncertainty, how you can never be sure about anything, from your creative work to your income. And yet you have to embrace it, because that uncertainty creates possibility.

  28. When you’re coming up with names of characters for a story, you’ve got a name you like, but maybe you like it because you used it for someone in one of your other stories and you can’t remember.

  30. My #tips for writing a 4-page #comic.

Step 1: Write page one. The beginning.

Step 2: #Write page four. The end.

Step 3: Then write page 2 and 3 like the messy glue that holds it all together. The messier the problems here the better.

Step 4: Once finished, hand your pathetic excuse for a #script to the #artist and see if they can understand what's going on because you sure don't.

    Step 5: #Publish

  33. Working on the next book and I've just written a scene where somebody is knocked unconscious. At this point, I don't know how many times I've done this to a character, but probably at least one in every novel, and a few more books besides. I have spent an unexpected amount of time coming up with ways of describing losing and regaining consciousness.

  35. Bracing myself for the book section of #LateLateToyShow. I have such high hopes every year that it'll be longer, that they'll show more books, that they won't rush through it as if it's a distraction from the toys. Let this be the year that things change.

  37. Me, teaching story structure: ‘Your plot is the skeleton on which you hang the flesh of emotional elements of your story. Without the skeleton, you have a shapeless pile of flesh. Without the flesh, you have a bare skeleton, and you can’t get emotionally involved with a skeleton.’

  40. If you're a self-employed artist who works with children in Ireland, you've probably had to go through Garda vetting at some point. In fact, it's likely that you're having to go through it over and over again, and you're wondering why.

I've written a blog that tries to explain how it all works.

No, seriously. I wrote a blog that tries to explain #GardaVetting – the background checks carried out by Ireland's police force – from the point of view of artists doing children's events.

  42. There's an excellent resource on the TeachingBooks website where they have audio files of authors telling you how to pronounce their names, and giving some background on why they were given that name, or where it came from. Apart from being useful, it's really interesting to hear what people's voices sound like.
