On the 27 April 1921 in Listowel, County Kerry, a proclamation was posted by the military stating that in future reprisals for any outbreak against the lives and property of officials would be taken against the property of selected persons without proof of their implication in the outrage.

Tomás MacCurtain, the Sinn Féin Lord Mayor of Cork, was shot dead in front of his wife and son by a group of men with blackened faces on 20th March 1920. The murderers were subsequently found by the official inquest into the event to be members of the Royal Irish Constabulary. MacCurtain was also commandant of the Cork No. 1 Brigade of the IRA.

He an 18 year old medical student who was executed in 1920 for his part in an attack upon a British Army supply lorry which resulted in the deaths of three British soldiers. His execution inflamed nationalist public opinion in Ireland, largely because of his age.

Coyle was one of twenty female prisoners to escape on 7 May 1923. She was recaptured the following day however. Coyle was finally released from Kilmainham in December 1923.
Coyle was appointed to the executive of Cumann na mBan in 1924 and was elected as president in 1926, after Constance Markievicz resigned to join Fianna Fáil. It was a post she held until her resignation in 1941. 4/4

In September 1922 the Provisional Government decided to crack down on the activities of Cumann na mBan renegades and Coyle was the first member to be arrested as part of this move.
Initially held at Ballyshannon she became the first Cumann na mBan member to go on hunger strike, refusing food for seven days. Coyle was eventually taken to Mountjoy Prison from which she was transferred to Kilmainham. 3/4

Eithne Ni Cumhaill (Eithne Coyle) was born on 3 January 1897. She was an Irish republican activist, a leading figure within Cumann na mBan, an IRA officer and a member of the Gaelic League.
She was arrested on New Years Day 1921 and subsequently sentenced to three years penal servitude for aiding IRA members. In keeping with Cumann na mBan policy, she refused to recognize the court during her trial. 1/4

Michael Collins (Mícheál Ó Coileáin) was buried on August 28, 1922 in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin. An estimated 500,000 people lined Sackville Street (O’Connell Street today). Thousands also attended Collins's funeral ceremony at Dublin's Pro Cathedral, including both Irish and foreign dignitaries.

On 2nd April 1919 Constance Markievicz was appointed Minister for Labour in the First Dáil. She became both the first Irish female Cabinet Minister and, at the same time, only the second female government minister in Europe. She was the only female cabinet minister in Irish history until 1979.
