Today I made a new Monk picture. Monk is battling his way along the top of an ominous black formation. There’s snow. The trees are bent by the wind. Birds above and below.
There’s an unsettling sense of Monk in struggle.
It’ll go on my website tomorrow unless someone wants it before then.

Sir William Orpen, Self-portrait, 1906
The pen & ink with watercolor sketch was part of a letter sent by the Irish artist to his American patron + mistress, Florence Evelyn St. George. Orpen wrote almost daily to St. George - the letters always illustrated + sometimes composed of nothing but drawings. Their daughter Vivien gave over 350 illustrated letters by Orpen, dating between 1906 + 1929, to the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin.

These two Monk pictures started a journey to their new home in Ohio today.
I love paintings finding a home with someone who has taken the trouble to fall in love with them.
Even better, I delivered them by hand to the buyer. We met in the shadow of Errigal, talked for a few minutes, and said goodbye.
Art is (for me) personal. Saying goodbye to a painting is pride tinged with sadness.

My most recent piece ‘An Féar Gortach’ / The Hungry Grass based on the old Irish folklore. A cursed patch of grass, that caused an insatiable sense of hunger and weariness upon anyone who walked over it.
