A small stone church was established here as early as the 11th century, and it was later extended with a chancel in the 13th century.

The church has almost been entirely swallowed by the drifting sand, and has only been kept clear by the dedication and work of the islanders.

  5. More from Killuragh cave, Ireland. This distal humerus (fore leg) bone from a pig of wild boar found in the same pit fill as Arctic lemming, Irish mountain hare and wood mouse. Hopefully we can get it radiocarbon dated. Very visible parallel fine cut incised marks on the bone associated with butchering practices by humans. #IrishCaveBones #pigs #cutmarks #wildboar #irisharchaeology #cavearchaeology #archaeology #zooarchaeology

  6. In his book, 'Experiments on Reality', the cartographer and writer Tim Robinson describes the 'three fragile moments of place' as 'beauty, strangeness and antiquity'.

I can't think of anywhere that fits the criteria so well as Skellig Michael.

  8. Keeping vigil this morning at the Solstice sunrise at Knockroe Passage Tomb, Kilkenny. After a low cloud gave us a little bit of worry the sun finally broke through.

  14. CW: Archaeological dog bone

Early morning at work at my desk, and found this rather large partial radius of a large type dog … or canid at any rate. From the hinterland of Co. Dublin, Ireland. Measurements recorded and added to the #VikingDublinDogs database. #dogs #JoinThePack #Irisharchaeology #zooarch

  15. One of my favourite local landmarks, St. Patrick’s Holy Well just near the village of Marlfield outside Clonmel in South Tipperary.

It's so beautiful and peaceful there, especially at this time of year (though perhaps not so much on a bleak rainy day like today!)

  16. I shall be using CWs on all my archaeological animal bone photographs with ALT text included from now on. I'm getting to grips with this plaform and enjoying it.

I know photos of animal bones aren't for everyone and I want to not give people horrifying experiences.
