Spotted this possible moated site very late last night while mapping, just when I was about to shut down for the night. I've reported it to the National Monuments Service today. It's about 60m across. Unfortunately, the townland name Ballygowney is post-Cromwell, so no help historically. But the field name might be Seanchúirt, unless that applies to the other field with a moated site in the same townland. Teampall Caomháin • Inis Oírr

A small stone church was established here as early as the 11th century, and it was later extended with a chancel in the 13th century.

The church has almost been entirely swallowed by the drifting sand, and has only been kept clear by the dedication and work of the islanders.

More from Killuragh cave, Ireland. This distal humerus (fore leg) bone from a pig of wild boar found in the same pit fill as Arctic lemming, Irish mountain hare and wood mouse. Hopefully we can get it radiocarbon dated. A c.10th century sundial at Nendrum, County Down.

Another year approaches, to add to the thousand or more since this sundial was made for the early monastery of Nendrum in County Down.

May AD 2023 be recorded in the Annals as a good and peaceful year.

What is missing from #MastodonApps is the ability to group and follow hashtags as defined by the user. For example I’m interested in #IrishHistory and #IrishArchaeology. The web interface allows me to follow that collective combination, I’ve yet to see that in a #MastodonApp.

That would be a killer feature that #Twitter lacks and a real opportunity for an enterprising developer

And finally our oldest object. This small wooden artefact, shaped like a little boat, was found along with well preserved wooden fishtraps in a bog at Clowanstown, Meath. The fishtraps were dated to 5210 and 4970 BC, at the end of the Mesolithic period.

Musical instruments are always a popular toy (for someone else's children).

These bone flutes & buzzbones would make quite a racket! The buzzbones had a cord thread through the hole and twisted, when the cord was pulled it rotated the bone, producing a loud buzz.
