  4. A must-watch on the subject:

Are Irish Americans actually "Irish"? Are immigrants to Ireland "Irish"? What does it actually mean to be Irish anyway?

  6. The newest addition to our #backyard #garden. This is a #European consort black currant bush that we purchased from a private seller in Livingston, #NewJersey . When this grows in and produces berries, we'll be able to make authentic #Irish soda #bread with real garden-grown black currants. That makes my #IrishAmerican heart happy.

  7. For Saint Patrick's Day, two quotes that are attributed to WB Yeats - one real and one not.

First, a lovely line Yeats never wrote that didn't seem to appear until 50 years after he died:

"Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy which sustained him through temporary periods of joy."

I love the stoic message, but the phrasing is funny enough to subtly undermine its own meaning. Whoever really came up with it remains, tragically, unknown.

Second, a real one from Yeats in 1911 describing another Irish writer, John Millington Synge:

"He loves all that has edge, all that is salt in the mouth, all that is rough to the hand, all that heightens the emotions by contest, all that stings into life the sense of tragedy...."

I wish everyone, Irish or not, a joyful day that is not quite 100% free of sadness. We need the combination. And in any case, you can't avoid it. ☘️
