To call Cormac Begley and Liam O’Connor’s music #IrishTrad, is to do it a disservice.
These two men are musical innovators and there is little traditional about their approach. Let’s say they’re masters of the indigenous sound but are extending that fuaim into new territories
Maybe there work would be better served by calling it #CeolDúchasach. Regardless, give this a listen, and a watch, both music and imagery are superlative

🇮🇪 U2 "Zooropa" – 1993
An experimental and sonically adventurous follow-up to Achtung Baby, where U2 push deeper into electronic textures, ambient layers, and fragmented song structures. The album feels looser and more exploratory with reflecting themes of media saturation, identity, and modern disconnection...

Oh, it turns out that I'm playing Twisting of the Hayrope on the Low D whistle on @plotnik 's album release show tonight at Seward Cafe.
(I had only originally planned to play banjo on one song but you know how it is)

And as an additional treat, Whiskey in the Jar on the mandolin

I had a chance to sit in on my first Irish session last weekend!!!
I didn't play as I only know one jig and I'm not able to play it very fast yet (I'm at 160BPM with the Swallowtail Jig) right now working towards 200BPM).
So I introduced myself and then sat at a closeby table and drank some beer while listening to the session. It went on for two hours and I took good notes and enjoyed myself quite thoroughly.
Cool thing happened!!!
After the session was over, folks sat with me and we got to know each other. They gave me tips and encouraged me to keep practicing.
After a bit, I pulled out my whistle and played the Swallowtail Jig, to show them where I was at. And get this!!! A fiddle player heard me start playing and pulled out his fiddle and plucked along with me!
That's the first time I've played with anyone else! It's a simple thing, but I can't express how elated I was.
They invited me to sit with them next time. Knowing full well I'm a proper beginner and learner with only a single jig under my belt. It's driven me to make sure I practice each day. I don't want to let them down and it's a wonderful thing to look forward to each month.

Moya Brennan at Cork Opera House
The news broke this morning that Moya Brennan passed away yesterday, and this photo has been on my mind ever since I heard. I took it at Cork Opera House on the 2nd of March 2020, during Clannad's Farewell Tour. What a strange, loaded date that turned out to be. Barely a fortnight later the country shut down, venues went dark, and the idea of standing shoulder-to-shoulder in a theatre listening to a voice like hers felt like something from another era. They put on a fabulous performance that […]https://inphotos.org/2026/04/14/moya-brennan-at-cork-opera-house/

This is a good video on Appalachian music, but the channel as a whole has a lot of useful stuff on #irish music. Maybe give it a watch?

I've been enjoying learning the Irish Whistle / Tin Whistle. Bought a very inexpensive $15 USD whistle and been tooling on it for a couple of months learning off of free youtube videos.
I suck at it but I really enjoy it and want to continue learning.
So since I'm sticking with it, I figure I ought to take some lessons. Gonna sign up with https://oaim.ie .
Also looking at getting an "expensive" tin whistle. Looking at some between $150 to $250 USD for a single high D whistle.
As an aside, I really have enjoyed listening to the Uilleann Pipes and looked into how much a cheap set would cost...
...nope. Gonna stick with my penny whistle. 😅 (at least for now 😝)

AS HEARD ON TV: "Our version of "Sleepy Maggie" is used in "The Black Donnellys" pilot. About 7 minutes into the show there's a bar scene --"Sleepy Maggie" plays throughout the scene.
The tune is a Mad Maggiefied version of a traditional reel.
