Oh wow. They're using OUR TOWN by Iris DeMent in Resident Alien. That was the song they used in the Northern Exposure Finale at the very end. I get kind of emotional hearing it.

And speaking of old friends, I last saw Iris live as the opener for Greg Brown in I guess 1992, touring her great first album, "Infamous Angel." (They married some years later.) But hadn't seen or listened to her in awhile. Must catch up on her later stuff. Unmistakable voice, unique talent.

I've not heard of the new album you mentioned but am going to find it to sample. Also - Marvin Gaye is almost a pretty solid choice. Do you like Sam Cooke too? Both him & Marvin are my fave Motown artists.
