  11. Good morning

    Final scene, "Flashdance" (1983), #JenniferBeals

    (music, #IreneCara, "What a Feeling")

    Set your goals

    You may stumble

    Then smash those goals

    Fun trivia:

Jennifer Beals did the close ups

Marine Jahan, a French dancer, did the majority of the dancing

Sharon Shapiro, a professional gymnast, did the jump in the air and tumble into...

Richard Colon, a B-boy from the Bronx's Rock Steady Crew, doing the breakdance backspin, while wearing a wig

  15. Tune Tuesday's theme is "My Generation Music" aka music from around when you were born, so, let's tell a story cause...why not.

    ----

The year is 1983. Return of the Jedi and Monty Python's the Meaning of Life were in theaters.

In upstate NYS, that summer my parents gave birth to their first born, me - an aggressively geeky and white baby boy coming out looking like some kind of plucked chicken.

On that day, the Number 1 song in America was Flashdance: What a Feeling by Irene Cara. songwhip.com/irene-cara/flashd

What a song. What a year.

    Host: @Kitty
    Theme: @The_KamikaZEN

  17. #IreneCara’s signature song #Fame reminds me of my high school’s annual Lip Sync contest, which I entered every year.

In year 12 a group of us did a routine to ‘Fame’, dressed in 1980s leotards etc. My friend Emah was the lead singer/lip syncer.

I was also doing another lip sync act of my own, to ‘Ain’t There Anyone Here For Love?’ from #GentlemenPreferBlondes (part of my innocent yet unerring pull towards camp), so under my leotard I had on stockings that significantly reduced my grip on the floor. It did not occur to me (as yet undiagnosed #neurodivergent) that I could or should wear shoes – to me the dance had to be done in ‘bare feet’.

The number was choreographed so we would all run towards the centre of the stage from either side, and leap into the air as our paths meshed in the middle. Except I skidded and collided face-first with my friend Lynda.

Later in the routine we each had a featured moment dancing from the back to the front of the stage. My stockinged feet failed me again and my featured moment was me falling flat on my arse at centre stage. I can find it funny now but at the time I was crushingly embarrassed.

Anyway, we were ahead of our time as the 1980s did not come back into pop cultural prominence for another decade or so. #RIP #IreneCara
