  1. @jum

  3. Actually Portable Ruby 3.4.7

One binary that runs on Windows, MacOS, Linux, FreeBSD, and more--across x86_64 and arm64. Includes ruby, irb, and gem. Features the whole language, but doesn't support gems with native extensions (yet?).

  4. "Gig workers expressed that, after noticing frequent changes on the listing platforms that were made without their consent, they started to see themselves as laboratory rats rather than valued users. Because their messages were blocked by chatbots, they were unable to speak to the platform to complain or opt out of the changes. Frustration flared and apathy set in. Their income and well-being declined.

This is concerning, not only because of how it affects gig workers, but also because academics are increasingly becoming involved in designing digital experiments. Social scientists follow strict Institutional Review Board (IRB) procedures that govern the ethics of experiments involving people — such as informing them and requiring consent — but these rules don’t apply to technology companies. And that’s leading to questionable practices and potentially unreliable results.

Technology companies use their terms of service to authorize them to collect data without any obligation to inform people that they were involved, or provide any opportunity for them to withdraw. Thus, digital experimentation faces scant oversight."

  5. bureaucracy - by Dhruv Methi - Midnight Musings

    🎯 Key Points:

  7. The @NulliusInVerba episode on ethics review has some interesting parts and is worth listening if you are interested in #ResearchEthics

To me several sections sounded like they implied that the ethics committee would "approve" research.

I would content that this is not the case. I provide below two quotes from @ukrio sources (both interesting reads beside this point).

How is this in other institutions? In other countries?

  8. Interestingly, `IRB.conf[:PROMPT] = :SIMPLE` won't change current prompt mode. Instead, I had to use `irb_context.prompt_mode = :SIMPLE`.

I guess that makes sense? However, for something like `:USE_PAGER` you have to configure it via `IRB.conf[:USE_PAGER]` instead.

  10. Apparently there's a not so small niche of people that use PowerShell on Linux. This makes me wonder whether we could woe them over to using `irb` as their preferred quasi-shell / scripting REPL? `irb` has come a long way and is basically a quasi REPL/editor.

  11. If you are the subject of an experiment, just to "see how it works" or to "gather data" you are still entitled to be asked for informed consent.

This is basic research ethics 101, and it's not complicated.

Subjects of an experiment must be offered the choice to participate. Full stop.

  13. @iainbeeston A lot of this functionality has been available in the new #debuggem for a while now, but had to be set. I think it's the new integration with #irb that giving it more of a #wowfactor.
