If we assume extended drawdown past statutory minimum to actual tank bottom numbers reported by Aljazeera, than the drawdown period naturally extends by several weeks.

As for this week's numbers, I'd guess we're seeing a combination of price pressure on top of the usual demand drop that happens at the end of summer driving season. While heating oil demand will ramp up soon - soon enough we should be seeing it as soon as next week - it's much less total draw.

As always, I remind readers that "tank bottom" does not mean "no oil." Those are very different phenomena. There will be lots of oil. The price will simply rise enough to destroy enough demand to meet supply levels.

Today's crude oil report, US supply as of 4 September 2026:

In thousands of barrels:

Commercial: 424,069 (-391 from last week)
SPR: 285,360 (-1244 from last week)

That's a 1.2 Mbl drop in commercial stocks, and a 0.4 Mbl drop in the strategic reserve, for a net drop of 1.6 Mbl, a dramatically slower drawdown than last week.

The five-week moving SPR drawdown average is now at 3.9 Mbl, with a raw extrapolation statutory tank bottom at 64 days from Sept. 4, or 58 days from date of posting (10 Sept. 2026), or November 13th - a significant extension of time, and after midterm voting ends.
