  1. Ok, computer touchers, I've got netboot.xyz.efi on my tftp server and set the DHCP option so my desktop which I'm testing on will try to boot from it... but my network doesn't allow outbound HTTP and you have to go through a proxy. Anyone know how to set the proxy for netboot.xyz / iPXE ? I'm doing some web searches but only finding hints not solutions so far.

  2. At @bawuenet we're in the process of upgrading our #Xen #xcpng hypervisors to #uefi boot. Of course, we automate things and want to be able to reinstall our hypervisors from network boot. Our EFI netboot system is based on #ipxe which means it can only load EFI binaries. But xcp-ng ships the Xen kernel as a multiboot2 based image.
As probably one of the most weird ways to solve this problem, I've decided to chainload #grub2 from iPXE and learned a bit! 🧵

  7. Is it possible to manage netbook.xyz’s menu config files manually and not via the UI?

  8. « netboot.xyz lets you #PXE boot various OS installers or utilities from a single tool over the network. This lets you use one media for many types of OS or tools. The #iPXE project is used to provide a user friendly menu from within the BIOS that lets you easily choose the OS you want along with any specific types of versions or bootable flags.

You can remote attach the ISO to servers, set it up as a rescue option in #GRUB or even set up your home network to boot to it by default »

  9. Sidequest #iPXE issue

    Serial output looks like:

Apparently this is a very old issue but I am not sure how to fix it without breaking my #QEMU setup

  12. Ryan Does #NixOS - Part 7

I was able to generate the required files for
#iPXE booting a #flake (#kernel + #initrd w/ #squashfs + iPXE script file), but kept running into issues with the kernel "unable to mount root fs" or "initramfs unpacking failed: invalid magic at start of compressed archive". What is weird is that https://github.com/nix-community/nixos-images/ when booted through netboot.xyz works just fine, if I grab the underlying kernel + initrd + iPXE script on MULTIPLE #systems , it fails with the latter message.

This is really boggling my mind as I thought there was data corruption happening, but I am more likely to believe something is happening within NixOS's
#zstd compression, or with that building process.

  13. Ryan Does #NixOS - Part 6

Put in a few config files for the "micro" editor into my user config -> home-manager, and finally put a (hashed) password in for root. Empty passwords != auto login. I'll get around to setting up disko for the "hp" flake system soon, which will lead into experimenting with nixos-anywhere. "fire and forget" reproducible installs would be very cool, especially along with ISOs and
    #ipxe boot images.

  14. Does anyone here have a public ipxe/netboot.xyz server?

  15. Does anyone know the name of this iPXE server software, i remember it being written in some language like ruby or something (might be misremembering), and i was able to serve a distro using like 1-2 command line options?

  16. Ignoring an issue with proposed fix for nearly three years, not giving any feedback, having community members(?) demand test cases (which don't exist for other use-cases either), all the while ignoring all communication on the topic, pushing all sorts of other changes to the project and *then* merging one's own implementation (of course without tests) instead.

Please, whatever you do, don't run your #freesoftware project like #ipxe, as it is how you will drive potential #contributors away.

Does anyone in the vicinity of Cambridge (UK) have an old 486-based system that they'd like to donate in the interests of debugging an #iPXE issue that apparently manifests only on real 486 hardware?
