  5. San Miguel Mission Chapel is considered the oldest church still in use in the United States. The original church was built in 1598. Nuestra Señora de Perpetuo was constructed between 1615 – 1626. That is the church that exists today. The walls are approximately 5 feet wide, with huge, carved vigas. The community changed the name of the church between 1800 and 1801.

  6. Poshuouinge was built on a high mesa around 1400. The site is about 150-feet above the Chama River. There are two springs located about 500 feet south of the ruins. Archaeologists believe they were the main water sources for the habitation.

  8. Twenty Spanish families established a settlement in 1744, Santa Rosa de Lima de Abiquiú. Located 40 to 50 miles northwest of Santa Fe, they built a small church on a bluff overlooking the river. A series of Comanche raids in 1747 devastated the community, forcing them to a more secure location up-river. They restored the Santa Rosa church. Though it is in ruins now, it was active until the 1930s.
