A pied-billed grebe on the #IowaRiver along the #IowaRiverTrail. This encounter was a complete first for me. I didn't know this species existed prior to taking this photo and rushed home to ID it as soon as I could. For a birder, that's about as exciting as it gets👍.

It was an incredible year for American bald eagles along the #IowaRiver in #Coralville and #IowaCity, Iowa. But the beginning of March is typically the end of the migratory visit and the eagles move north to breed. Sorry to see them go but look forward to our encounters next year.

Other than the usual focus & framing concerns (had to go w/ a landscape crop w/ this image) it's been my experience that it's difficult to find an angle on a gull that can't produce a beautiful image. This is a ring-billed gull flying over the #IowaRiver near the #IowaRiverPowerDam along the #IowaRiverTrail in #Coralville, Iowa.

A remarkable number of eagles on the #IowaRiver between #IowaCity & #Coralville this past winter. A friend counted 48 along a 7 mile stretch of the river & the #IowaRiverTrail. On Monday I observed 10 in stand of 5-7 trees. I think this one👇, taken from the paved trail, may be the closest I've been to a bald eagle.

This log has been in the same location near the shore of the #IowaRiver & just upstream of the #IowaRiverPowerDam for the past 3 years. Presumably there's some underwater structures that keep it fixed in place & prevent it from drifting away & passing over the nearby dam. The local ducks & geese have found it a convenient location to rest, bask, preen, & perform their morning ablutions.

Came across some interesting ice formations on the #IowaRiver and along the #IowaRiverTrail the other day. Presumably little "islands" of ice that fused together due to to the slower current and especially cold shadows along one side of the river next to the dam.
