Last week we put out an appeal for an interviewee following an approach from Newstalk.

Zita kindly came forward.
She ended up being interviewed as part of a segment on #invisibleillnesses and #Invisibledisabilities .

I am privileged to be a middle aged white hetero man.

I am also privileged to have my hobby as my job.

My job is teaching people (mostly kids) to play chess.

I am totally inclusive in my job teaching kids from different genders, ethnic backgrounds, socio-economic factors, health issues etc. I treat all my students with the same respect and offer them all the same chances for engagement.

I try to do the same away from work, though I am somewhat more on the introverted side of the scales. I won't judge people until I know them, and am equally wary of everyone.

On mastodon, I have tended to stay away from social and political issues, preferring instead to focus on my lifestyle. But I feel I need to state plainly that any bigotry that I perceive here will be reported and the bigots blocked. I can't block in real life, but I can support openly those who are persecuted. This includes cultural minorities, LGBT+, refugees and immigrants, women, youth, ill, disabled etc.

I am not educated fully regarding these issues, but I'm willing to listen, and willing to learn. We need to do better to support those who need help.
