  1. I imagine the goose meme aimed at the general farm electorate:

"Who's to blame for these costs, prices, and markets?

    "Who's to blame, em-effers!?"

    To paraphrase Olivia Newton-John, "Let's get p'litical... p'litical. We're gonna get political."

There's often free ice cream, though, and free seed-company tote bags large enough to contain an entire kraft paper grocery bag of food.

I once saw the governor there near an exhibit warning about Palmer amaranth.

Palmer Amaranth sounds like a cable news presenter.

"I'm Bobbi Batista. And I'm Palmer Amaranth. Here are the headlines…"

The State Fair implement show known as Machinery Hill is not what it used to be. If you want farm machinery, you gotta go to Farmfest.

  3. @avlcharlie yep. That drizzle thing. Got a tree laying in the “yard” (the clearing behind the house) that wants cutting into chunks, and two more that we can now see. But. Rain. Another coffee will be good.

  6. I have spent some time in the woods today to remove invasive garlic mustard and I'm finding less than I expected. The plants that I am finding appear to have damaged leaves. I'm wondering if a couple of the sudden cold snaps we had after one of our false springs are responsible. #ilwx #spring #hope #plants #invasives

  8. New (?) invasive pest defoliating boxwood shrubs.

Box tree moth is new to this part of SE Michigan. I'm not a big fan of boxwood, but it's common.
Useful write up by a local paper.

The box tree moth can defoliate, and even kill, a shrub in just one season.

The danger is it takes over large areas and deprives native pollinators food and a place to lay their eggs. Monarchs will use this plant but no larva will survive.

  11. Me at 0800: ooh, it rained last night and it's nice and cool this morning! I'll just go out and do a half-hour of weeding before breakfast!
Me at 1045: *hangrily starts making breakfast*
This Bermuda grass can fuck off into the sun. I had to dig up the entire big lily cluster on the right, to get at all the Bermuda grass roots underneath and amongst them, and then replant the lilies once I'd gotten that space as clear of roots as possible. Hopefully the lilies will survive the insult...

  13. The new issue of my Bad Naturalist newsletter is up! It's May on the Mountain--surprise bird nests, something in the pond --and in my hair, native and invasive plants, two bird books (and a poodle). Read it here, and subscribe if you like.

  19. Not all plants are weeds. Not all introduced species are invasive. And even the so called 'notorious' invasives support native wildlife in the ecologically disturbed habitats of our great cities.

  21. Are new #invasives like #SpottedLanternFly worse in #nyc this year?
Yesterday in #VanCortlandtPark they were all over the place. Today in #InwoodHillPark there were even more. Like 1000’s.

I paused under the Henry Hudson Parkway to swat a few 100. Felt pointless. Some helpful guy said to me “you’re the third person I seen stopped to swat those things”. Geez.

  23. I SAW A LOT OF LYMANTRIA DISPAR, SPONGY MOTH, IN SARATOGA COUNTY AT THE START OF MY ADIRONDACKS TRIP. 25. It's a hard balance between getting rid of fossil fuel powered machinery and vehicles and buying *new stuff that is electric, mostly plastic encased and is made in countries a long way from here. The first thing to think about is using LESS energy all around and buy less stuff. I did get an electric mower a while back because letting the yard get tall and dry in these fire summers is a bad idea. But, I am also constantly finding ways of using up that space to grow food. I have no native top soil, just rocky grit so I build raised beds everywhere. One area in my yard has a whole bunch of clay type soil that a neighbour was getting rid of many years ago. It became a base for building fertile soil but it's the only spot that has any. That doesn't mean the weeds don't grow in the rest, they grow everywhere. Couch grass is the main culprit. Some weeds are useful medicinals and pollinators: dandelions, plantain, and mullein. There is a bad patch of invasives: blackberries, tansy and mint. I pick as many berries as I can, pick and dry the mint for tea, and dry the tansy to use in the bee smoker. But there is still far too much. Chopping it back (with a machete) every year before it goes to seed seems to help it from spreading. I'm constantly searching for new ways to use less engine powered machinery and more hand powered tools. And keeping the peace and the silence.
